Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, was served search warrants by the FBI in cooperation with the US Attorney's Office in Southern New York. Search warrants were served at his residences and offices in New York, with possible evidence of money laundering, fraud and campaign finance law violations the targets.

Special Counsel Mueller uncovered potential evidence of criminal conduct, but this matter was beyond the scope of his investigation, so he referred it to the US AG/DOJ, who then passed it on to the US attorney of New York.

I find great irony that Trump is being sued over a written contract he never signed and claims he never paid consideration for. What a circus.

Another irony: Trump personally interviewed and then appointed the US Attorney in southern NY... the same US Attorney who reviewed the evidence and decided there was probable cause that the crimes occurred and had to approve the affidavits to the federal court for the search warrants.

I don't know if he actually reviewed the docs. He's since recused himself from the investigation.

whoops...I 'm a victim of fake news...apologies for my alternative fact that Trump's own man dimed him out...wonder if they'll ever make public the affidavit for the search warrants, so we can see who in the US Atty's office signed it...

Fact: Cohen's public words and behavior are real...

I certainly hope that the suspected criminal activity is 'significant' -- pretty heavy-handed stuff for anything less than serious felony-type activity, IMO. But, at least it has been educational....I learned a lot about attorney/client-privilege the last couple days....I watched enough tv law drama, from Matlock to Breaking Bad to have believed that it was pretty sacrosanct -- turns out...well, not so much -- risk to Trump has jumped a couple notches, and I'm not convinced that's entirely fair just yet

yup, it'll be interesting what, if any, criminal charges result...

Campaign finance laws are considered pretty significant...there have been a few elected officials in CA recently who've been thrown out of office and charged criminally for violating those regs...

Cohen has one client, AFAIK, the Donald. Raid of two offices and two residences leads me to believe that something relating to Trump will have been collected....no?

My understanding always had been that most (nearly all?) communications between attorney (Cohen) and client (Trump) were privileged, and thus protected from use in prosecutions of the client. Reading I've done the last day or two (prompted by this news) learns me different....things just got escalated for Trump

I suspect you guys are correct. But, what of it? Trump was stupid to lie about the affair and payment from the get-go....nobody believes he wasn't aware of the pay-off. But, is lying about the piece on the side enough to warrant top level FBI attention and lawyer office raids? If that's the crux of the issue, what's the worst criminal charge we might hear? At least nobody's talking about collusion right now, right?
