The current outcome of being a federal employee is having no income.

What would be the outcome if 1/3 of the government shut down and nobody noticed?

The people who won't get Food stamps soon would notice, the children who won't get breakfast or lunch at school shortly would notice. The national parks that are being vandalized would notice. There are plenty of other examples that would be noticed. The HUMAN BEINGS effected by this are noticing. The places the 800,000 spend their money will notice. But who cares, right Dave. I mean its not like people will have to choose between putting food on their table or pay for life saving medicine. Or worry about being evicted due to not paying their rent.

Who won't get food stamps? I know nothing about this risk.

Lunch at school? I don't know about that, either. But, might engender a somewhat different conversation, too.....I mean let's talk about fed responsibility to feed kids at school.

National Park vandalism? Yeah - agree that its fd up...people that cut down Joshua Trees and other stupid chit should do serious time in jail....Is that the fault of the shutdown? Or, that of morally deprived individuals with irresponsible parents and likely little redeeming societal value?

Which HUMAN BEINGS? Is it my role as a federal tax payer to prop up those businesses where the money isn't being spent? Is that really a good reason to employ government workers?

Don't get me wrong -- I think the shutdown is a great example of how broken our representative system is currently. Should NEVER have happened. But since it has, it might be a good time to consider whether we really need a government so big that when its shut down for three weeks, the impact is remarkably minor (IMO.)

What about the kids on the border states that get diminished education because the class sizes are ballooned to unreasonable numbers due to teachers and staff not being allowed to ask if the kids that don't speak English are legal or not.

American citizens' education is suffering due to illegals sneaking their children in. It burdens the system to where there's not much budget to go around. Which causes high quality teachers to quit or get weeded out because their test scores are suffering because half their students don't speak English.

Illegal immigration causes problems whether you want to admit it or not. I'm not the biggest fan of Trump, but he is the only president that I've seen that actually wanted to do something about it.

I think the temporary sacrifice is worth it... like dstieger said, it might be a good time to look at certain programs that can be cut. Obviously we don't need them all.

Government shutdown? Funny, the government is still getting a cut of every income check I receive.

The irony of this shutdown is that the primary reason for the shut-down is to protect our country from illegal immigrants and the drugs and crime they bring, and yet the very people whose jobs it is to protect us against this crisis are the US Coast Guard, the DHS and the TSA, who are the MOST impacted by the shutdown.

Those human beings who work at places most likely to be at risk of encountering terrorists and drugs, at airports and at ports of entry, are being told to paint houses, babysit, do garage sales, handyman stuff to pay their bills while their paychecks stop coming in. Other employees affected that could affect public safety are federal air traffic controllers and FDA inspectors. They are among the 800,000 federal employees who are furloughed by the shut-down yet expected to report for duty...

so a ginned up emergency could lead to real emergencies...

As long as my elected officials in DC continue to collect their paycheck then I'm OK with it...

all federal politicians, including members of Congress (House and Senate) and their staffs and the support personnel who maintain the chambers along with the POTUS and his cabinets and all of their staff and support personnel should not be paid when the government is shut down...all lobbyists must refrain from all communication with members of Congress during a shutdown...

too bad there isn't a referendum system in the federal govt....maybe there are some honest and courageous Reps and Senators who would enact that law...

They can't come to a budget agreement, all Congress and the president get executed and we elect a new government.
