reality TV show POTUS is turning this event into a major LAME (look at me everybody) production, and reserving the best seats for his donors....

Sorry for setting it up for failure.

Al, I keep hearing what you're saying every time I turn on any news....but I think it is largely TDS talking...at least at this point. People are pizzed because Trump is doing it....no other rational reason thus far that I've heard.

Substitute 'Obama' for 'Trump' for any single thing about the 4th so far and there'd be nothing but praise and excitement. I haven't heard Trump say anything offensive or political about it....yet. 'Salute to America'....who the fluck gets upset about that?????

I know my friends in DC are not going.

Granted... by the time I left DC, going to the Mall was for people who didn't know anyone with a boat on the potomac.... so I'm not sure if their boycott is really anything meaningful.

But I do think you're wrong by saying he isn't doing anything that wouldn't have been acceptable by other presidents. A couple things off the top of my head:
1 - Cordoning off a "VIP" section for RNC leadership?
2 - Speaking at it? (I know this sounds weird, but he's literally making a celebration which in my memory has never involved the president "about him").... I would have been a little miffed if Obama did that, (I will admit less so... but that's more because I have a reasonable level of expectation that an obama speech won't just focus on himself. And I would grant that expectation to any of the president's we've had in my adult lifetime.... except the current one)

examples of him making it about him....:

"HOLD THE DATE! We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!"
"Our July 4th Salute to America at the Lincoln Memorial is looking to be really big. It will be the show of a lifetime!"
"Thanks to “Phantom Fireworks” and “Fireworks by Grucci" for their generosity in donating the biggest fireworks show Washington D.C. has ever seen. CEO's Bruce Zoldan and Phil Grucci are helping to make this the greatest 4th of July celebration in our Nations history!"
"Big 4th of July in D.C. “Salute to America.” The Pentagon & our great Military Leaders are thrilled to be doing this & showing to the American people, among other things, the strongest and most advanced Military anywhere in the World. Incredible Flyovers & biggest ever Fireworks!"

Never had any desire to get in the mosh pit even before it was Trumpified. Have watched the fireworks from the Carillon, but never down at the Mall. My wife is a photographer and we do go down for certain other specific occasions. As a 'first', she wanted to witness/document, etc. I'd rather not, but will absolutely go along if she wants to. Chit like this always becomes a positive memory even if it sux balls when you're in it.

Not too sure of the VIP details, but if offered a seat, I'd take it. I'd be surprised if big donors don't get special access at every event, public ones, especially...no matter who's in charge

Did you read what you posted, Victor?

Except for the 'joke?' about 'favorite President'......how do your examples make your case?

I mean.... not really... because it was a different event.
I went down once when I was living in Baltimore.... it was a good time.
I think I went once when I first moved to DC...

There wasn't any speeches... (or at least not any that anyone knew about).... so there was no "vip area" to watch the speakers. You just put a blanket out anywhere on the mall.... had a picnic or some wine or something... and waited until it got dark and the fireworks started.

It was first come first served, because there was no focal point to watch from, and it's all a public park.

Setting up any sort of speechifying changes the entire nature of the event.

You're really naive if you thing he was joking about "favorite president".

Any time he talks about something he or his administration is doing as the "biggest" or "best" or whatever superlative you want, he's making it about him.

Contrast it with what other politicians usually say regarding events like this. They put the focus on the event, on the crowd.
Can you imagine obama, or clinton, or bush jr, or bush sr, or reagan ever saying "we're going to have the greatest 4th of july in this nations history!" no... of course not.

It's self promotion....

... and that was just a quick scan of his twitter archive. I'm sure if we looked through actual speeches, I could find worse... but searching is hobbled right now by too many articles from just today.

Obviously you don’t pay attention when you listen to an Obama speech. He set and broke the record many times for the “I” density in presidential speeches.

gonna have to ask you to back that up with some facts? Did he say "I" more often than any other president?
How does that compare to however often trumpenfurher says the same thing?

can you refer back to any instance when a Dem POTUS said a parade showcasing military hardware would be great for the Fourth of July...

maybe what I post is on the minds of the majority of Americans...despite what you believe, I, and many on the left, are capable of independent thought...without guidance from a propaganda machine...if I post an opinion that is contrary to yours, it is not intended to insult you...

if you are bothered by my casual use of "mindless Trump followers" in some of my posts critical of Trump and his supporters, my intent is similar to yours: can we have a little introspection here?

besides, isn't this the place to discuss current events in our country and around the world?

it's too easy to dismiss my posts as MSM pablum...they have stopped taking my calls...at least you make an effort to state your opinions about daily issues, regardless of how they came to be...we all do tend to find information from sources that affirm our values and beliefs...

Quite a few red hats here, but a lot more diverse than I expected. Storms starting to roll in so it may thin out so we can move up closer to Lincoln Memorial...no VIP tickets for us 😞

Honestly I think there is nothing wrong with a military parade. It may not be traditional, but does that really matter? The French have a military parade in celebration of Bastille day. I think the British have a military parade to celebrate something.
