he House of Representatives approved the Raise the Wage Act Thursday, which would boost the federal minimum wage for the first time in a decade.

In a 231-199 vote along party lines, the House passed the legislation that would increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, more than double the current rate of $7.25. In an even more drastic increase, the bill calls for having the same minimum wage for tipped workers, raising it from $2.13 an hour.

A report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted that approximately 30 million people would see higher earnings as a result of the bill, bringing more than one million out of poverty.

"America's workers deserve a raise," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at a press conference before the vote.

The bill is unlikely to become law, however, as it would still need to pass in the Senate, which is controlled by a Republican majority.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., also celebrated the bill's passing, which he said was the "right thing to do"

Not sure if they need any help at looking bad these days...and it is not just the Senate. Trump would never sign it. He said the minimum wage was too high when campaigning in 2016.

Waitstaff and servers make less than minimum.

Labor is subject to the law of supply and demand just like everything else. When the price of something increases, people buy less of it. If this passes and Amazon/midwest manufacturing workers are suddenly making minimum wage, sh*t will get crazy really quick.

I'd like to ask Nancy or Bernie this question: would it be better to employ 1 person at $15/hr, or 2 people at $7.50?

^^Or none because the businesses automate. Expensive up front, but cheaper in the long run.

Amazon is already paying $15 an hour.. but the employees feel they're being worked to hard... like i said, the free stuff will never be enough... 😟

I don't know anyone able to live on $15/hour...

but since my vote is meaningless, who is offering money? I'll vote for them if the money is there.

I think that's still true just about everywhere.
But didn't some places like maybe Seattle bring them up to minimum?
It would be interesting to see what the negative effects were if that is true.
