a close up of the detail on the Indian on the bottle opener. Unreal. Expect a crate of Eastern European women on your doorstep any day now. No one knows they're missing so have some fun!

P.S. Dear NSA that was a joke! Prank caller Prank Caller!(click)

Hey Dave. Do you have any suggestions on how to protect the Indian? I want to hang it so I can use it but I also don't want to ruin it. I was thinking of some kind of clear coat. Maybe some idea on what I can use to make the amazing detail of the Indian more visible and then some clear coat for protection. If anyone has any idea's I would really appreciate hearing them. This bottle opener needs to be used I think. The work is amazing and should be seen and used by all instead of just hanging in my office where no one will see it except me and my giant ginger tabby tomcat Milo.

Milo also loves the humidor from Steve. He loves perching up there to sleep or using it as a base to plan and execute attacks on my wife's two female cats. Sometimes you can actually see the evil thoughts working their way through his brain.

Yeah, keep him away from the cavalry!
____

I would recommend Minwax Stain -
a mid to dark color will get you better contrast, thus better detail,
and a few coats of Minwax Polyurethane Clear Satin to protect it and add a bit of luster.

But I would take the recommendation of the creator of the artwork himself...

heh it took a few seconds to sink in but when I finally got it I lol'd and startled a cat. I'm still recovering so I'm not that quick on the uptake lately;-)

Thanks for the suggestions. I really do want to do something to make the detail on the Indian stand out before I clear coat it. It's so good it deserves to be seen. I haven't done much woodworking lately, I used to build wooden ships but my skills at painting them were never that good.

Circle the bare wood area with painter's tape.
Lay on a heavy handed coat of darker stain.
Quickly wipe off/rub out with a dry rag.

The raised areas will be lighter,
creases will be darker,
giving it an antiqued look.
Let it dry for a full day.
Apply the polyurethane.
Let each coat dry for a full day.

Beautiful!

Rub one out to celebrate...

Clarification -
A thorough, long stroke. Multiple if necessary...

Is there a stain you would suggest? I was also wondering, do you have a mini-CNC machine or do you do these by hand? Either way they are cool as hell!

A buddy of mine has a CNC where he works. He from time to time can sneak me in after hours to play around. The rest is done in my garage. For the stain I would use a lighter color. Most Home Depot/Lowes type stores should have example displays of stains. Pick the one you think would look best in contrast to the color of opener.
