It was on the 50th anny of that remarkable broadcast that I visited my sister and her family in West Windsor NJ. with my then 3 1/2 year old daughter...my sister's son turned 3 that anniversary day, Oct. 31 1988...hence the visit.
We went to a yuuuuuggge festival, I think at some Mercer County site, and it was spectacular.

I think about that broadcast from time to time. Between that and Citizen Kane a couple years later, Orson Welles created some ever lasting pieces of Americana culture.

I remember one day in the winter many years ago when I was stricken with a bad fever and was shivering in bed, then sweating in bed, and shivering in bed, and so on. It was about this time of the year. I would slip in and out of sleep trying to sweat it out and let my body fight it off.

I put on Turner Movie Classics for calming background noise. One of the movies they showed was Citizen Kane. I've never seen it before but it captivated my interest and I was able to stay awake long enough to watch the entire movie. It's an excellent movie.

My body was able to fight off the fever in about 2 days but in the depths of it, I gained an appreciation of the classic movie Citizen Kane... so I got that going for me.

not many products become generic descriptors for a specific product. Kleenex is used to call facial tissue, regardless of brand. Velcro has become the name for hook and loop fasteners, Levis are heavy denim pants. And Coke has become any kind of cola.

I worked for a company that used, literally, miles of Velcro strips and truck loads of Velcro "fabric" every month. We had some issues with one of their products we were buying from them so I was sent there to help them try to figure out the reason and work with them for a fix. (Velcro USA headquarters is located in New Hampshire).

At the time, our company was the #2 consumer of Velcro products in the USA. You'd be surprised (at least I was when they told me) that the #1 consumer of Velcro products in the US is diaper companies for disposable diapers. If you think about it, it's not too hard to grasp. A couple 1 inch squares on each disposable diaper that your change and toss out numerous times a day for each kid for years until they are potty trained... that adds up to a lot of hook and loop tabs.

Anyway, during the meetings and plant tours if I refereed to their product as Velcro, they would chime in and remind me that they don't make Velcro, they make hook and loop products. Velcro is the name of the company, hook and loop is what they make.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Jim Harbaugh received an early Christmas present Thursday night during the Los Angeles Chargers’ 34-27 win over the Denver Broncos.

Harbaugh got an opportunity to utilize what he called his favorite rule in football: The fair-catch kick.

According to NFL rules, if a player makes a fair catch, his team may attempt an unchallenged kick from the spot rather than begin its next possession. If the kick goes through the goalposts, it's worth three points, just like a field goal.

Harbaugh’s Chargers got a chance to take advantage of the rule when the Broncos were penalized for fair catch interference with under 10 seconds remaining in the first half. The 15-yard penalty gave Los Angeles the football on Denver’s 47-yard line. After the two teams exchanged timeouts, the Chargers trotted out Cameron Dicker for the 57-yard, fair-catch kick.

Dicker knocked the football through the uprights for the first successful fair-catch kick since 1976, and the longest converted fair-catch kick in NFL history.
