Used to go to the gym regularly when I was a teenager. Into my early 20’s I got married then we had two children. Was married about 31 years before the divorce. Needless to say life changed.

When I graduated HS in the early 80’s I weighed around 165 and wore a size 28x30 pants. Fast forward to around July of last year. I got up to around 258 and my waist size was a 42 when I finally decided I REALLY needed to do something.

My doctor changed my Rx for my A1C and shed about 38 pounds but stalled out around 220. But 3 weeks ago I started going back to the gym doing two a day workouts. In the AM I do one body part and Abs. In the evening a different body part and cardio. Also, changed my diet considerably.

This AM I weighed in at 208. Still have about 30-40 pounds to go. Not sure of exact weight goal. Basically it’s going to be a toss up between added muscle mass and minimal body fat. Hoping to get down to around 10-12% body fat. I figure that’s not bad for a soon to be 59 year old.

Anyone else hitting the gym?

Absolutely! Keep at it, man. I try to lift 3-4 times a week. Dog walking for an hour is my "cardio" every day, but occasionally I will do 20-30 minutes after I lift on the elliptical or treadmill.

As you may already know, 90% of dropping weight is what you're eating. Stay away from sugar and seed oils as much as possible. I will have a Thomas' English muffin with breakfast sometimes, but I try to do Ezekiel Bread because it has no added sugar and it's made with sprouted grains, so it's much less carbs and more fiber.

Green veggies like spinach, broccoli and kale (I hate the taste so I blend with protein shakes). Apples, blueberries, strawberries, avocado... and if you must treat yourself (as you should on occasion) it is best to do a sweet treat after a protein meal so the glucose/insulin spike is lessened. If you do it as a snack between meals the spike is ridiculous.

Currently 178 lbs this morning. I seem to hang around 175-182 lately.

Congrats to hitting the gym, I applaud anyone getting off the couch and making positive changes and not expecting them without hard work. You didn’t gain the weight overnight and therefore won’t lose it overnight either, it will take some work but stick with it. I did much of same, increased physical activity and eating right are the proper way to do it. Others want a magic pill or a surgery to do it when all you need is a treadmill and a better diet. Sadly, I know of some that had the surgeries and ended up worse, and also knew somebody who was happy to be nearing the target weight so they could qualify for the procedure. Pathetic!

Congrats on the lifestyle change as that is exactly what it requires. Not a diet, not just changing your routine for a few months.

I do a fast 5 mile walk every day out on the roads/paths (hate treadmills) and hit the gym every other day for about one hour. For me, it has always been part of my life coming from a distance runner habit but it still takes dedication and doesn't get easier as we age. My biggest issue is I have always been a beer and wine drinker with a running problem.o:)

Made huge diet changes. Breakfast is a protein shake with some fruit ground into it and 2 cups of coffee with cream. Lunch is usually something very light and “clean”. Throw in a 28 oz jug of Gatorade, a couple of bottles of water and 3-4 tangerines throughout the day. Normally don’t eat dinner as I’m not usually hungry.

In bed by 21:00 and alarm rings at 03:30.

At gym by 04:15. Home by 05:45. Work for 07:00 until 15:00 - 19:00 depending on the day. Back to the gym then home.

Lather, rinse, repeat….

Good for you. I got back into the gym 5 or 6 years ago and went from 270 to 230. That was my weight in high school when I played football, then I decided power lifting was fun. I've stayed fairly heavy but last year I broke into the 1200# club. Tried strongman and suffered a couple injuries but am back on the horse, looking to get into a 1400# total this year.

Just my opinion, but you don’t need to get into the gym twice a day, get it all done in one visit and go home.

I'm too old to do that sheit twice a day. It's also important to rest... which is why, like DED, it's an every other day deal for me. Mon-Wed-Fri is the usual. Throw in a weekend day when I feel like it. Adjust for fishing, etc...

It fits my schedule better.

Plus I get a better workout that way. For example normally chest and triceps are done on the same day. By slipping them my triceps are rested in the evening after having done chest in the AM so I can tolerate more weight.

Also I do abs every morning and cardio every evening. If I did it all together I’d be too tired to complete my entire workout.

It’s been a week since the OP. Down another 3.5 pounds and narrowed my waist by 1 1/4”. Another half pound and I’m lighter than I’ve been in 20+ years. Was actually there yesterday but I binged last night.

Started when my son came home at the end of May, he asked me to go to the gym with him. Haven’t been in a weightlifting room since I regularly got my smart arse whooped by older wrestlers and football players in 1982.

The boy put me on minimal weights, four upper body machines, and also the technique. Did it. Done.

I said “Why” the following day when he said Let’s go to the gym.
To learn how to move my lower body. Ok, same drill. Technique. Four machines.

Couple days later, he asked I go back to show I learned what he taught me (upper and lower).

Bought a membership.

Have stayed with it so far. 14 of the possible 20 days in May.

Slowly progressing.

^That's awesome, Russ. Watch... it's going to become a routine and you're going to be upset when you miss it or it gets thrown off.

I put on the headphones and get into my zen zone. Always feel awesome when I am done. Unless I overdo it... then it hurts.

I try to do a short work out on a regular basis with some 15 pound dumbbells.

I also live on a tiny island where I get around on a cruiser bicycle.

I don't have any weight goals, but I have gained 10 pounds since I started the hormone therapy pills for prostate cancer.

My goals are just to try and stay healthy... oh, and to see my junk when I need to use it.

I know a guy who bought an electric bike to go to the gym and work out. In three months he gained 5 pounds. Saved a bit on gas tho.
