My bank sends me an email each time my card is used for an on-line purchase. I just received four emails for $99 each used at a betting site at HARD ROCK BET in DAVIE, FL, USA

I don't know how they got it but I won't be charged. The card is cancelled and new one being expedited overnight. Now I need to visit and change billing info at about 20 sites.

🤬 Bassturds!

That famous smoke place that sells cigars got me during Covid times. More of the hassle of making sure I got all my bills switched over to the new number. I told them about it and the female employee taking phone orders who had a dog. (Could hear the dog in the background). They didn’t seem to care. I don’t order from them any more. Feel your pain brother what a nuisance

I got a call from my bank today from their fraud department or whatever. They say a charge to my account/debit card was from some strange place. The bank froze my account due to the suspicious charge. It was only $0.00 dollars. In talking with them (the bank), sometimes someone or some AI pings your account for a minimal charge just to see if the card is a viable account. If it is, then they comeback and withdraw real money.

Good thing my Credit Union caught that scam. Bad thing is I have to go to the bank and get a new debit card. No money lost but I'll have to update the auto pay bills with a new account number. It's a minor hassle to change account numbers. Hats off to the fraud system of my Credit Union.

It's a pisser when that happens. it isn't just the merchants, some credit card processors have data leaks.

I have text messages set to send for any charge to my credit card, It helps head off fake charges as soon as possible. One early morning, about 0200, I get a text for a charge at a pizza place hear Chicago. After calling my CC company, I looked up the pizza place and gave them a call. They were about to deliver the order. No pizza for thieves and their address went on their don't deliver here list. It happened a second time from a ready mix company. F'ing theives. 😣

It's happened to me twice...PITA to go back to all your regular vendors and change your authorized card number, and re-do your auto pays...

A couple weeks ago I thought it happened again. Had lunch with wifey at a local diner. That charge came thru... few days later, another much smaller charge came thru. VISA said if I contested the charge with them, they'd have to cancel the account and issue a replacement...PITA ...they suggested I call the diner to see if the charge can be resolved. Good thing I did that...their clerk said they had a server crash that day and it affected all the tip charges that were added after the bill was totaled. The problem was corrected a couple days later and the tip was charged separately. Thanks Geez...

Capital One and some other CC merchants now offerr a virtual card number service. You basically get unlimited throw away CC card numbers for use online that are actually charging your account. If a bad transaction occurs on one of these dummy card numbers, you just trash it and generate a new one. No ill effect on your actual card that sits in your wallet.

That's a good idea. Thanks for the heads up. Seems like it would be best to just trash the number right after using it and not generate one until you need it.

My strategy is to keep all my cards maxed out. That way there is nothing to scam. Seems to work well enough.🇨🇮

In all seriousness, I have this happen to me constantly. probably 2 or 3 times a year. I must be on a list somewhere that just keeps updating with my new numbers.

You can do it on-demand, but you can also (at least with CapitalOne) generate a disposable CC number per merchant, that you don't get rid of so you can have a saved card number with the merchant (to make checkout easier) and just dump that specific number if it frauds at some point.

2 or 3 times a year? The scammers are really after you.

It's happened to me 3 times over the years.
The last time was about 3 weeks ago.
