I recently bought an Indian Tabac Deluxe Churchill, in the tube. I brought it home and opened it to check it out before putting it in my humidor. The wrapper was totally split along the seam and in very sad shape 😞 I've heard in the past its bad etiquette to open them before buying so is there anyway to prevent this happening again?

Sounds like it was over humidified, right? Had that happen with a Santa Damiana tube I opened recently. It wasn't split but it was wrinkled and moldy. I'm getting the impression that those airtight tubes are a bad idea. Perhaps if they had a small vent hole....

If I hadn't opened it at the store (which I would have almost certainly done), I'd be taking it back to him and letting him replace it ... and why not? ... after all, IT is going to replace it for him ...

you've gotta give the merchant a chance to make it good ... goodwill is his most valuable, but least tangible asset ... he depends on your goodwill and that of other customers to do well with his business ... if you get (ticked) off and don't do business with him because of it, you both lose ...

I agree with Rick and X. Open in the store before laying out you hard earned dollars, and if you don't, and you get an onion cigar, then take it back.

It doesn't hurt to open them in the store and inspect for just this sort of thing!!@

I have learned to steer clear of tubos. The last 2 I was going to buy (opened in store), were covered in blume (generally brought on by storage in high heat). Some people like that blume may make a cigar more full bodied (brings out oils in the tabacco), but I HATE it....especially when I'm buying a mild-medium cigar for the AM...forget changing the cigars character completely.

It's YOUR money. F**k etiquette. I work in a cigar store and would rather someone find a bad smoke before buying it than having to deal with a refund or exchange later.

It was a bit awkward the first time I follow the "caveat emptor" rules for cigars at my local beer stop. That RyJ wasn't in a tube, but I remove it from the cello, lightly rolled it between my thumb and forefinger looking for any weakness in the wrapper and checking that it wasn't dry. Now the clerk knows not to ring it up until I say it's okay. When I buy cigars at my local tobacconist I've even gotten into the habit of lighting one up to make sure it's not plugged, especially if it's a Mac Maduro, which runs "too tight" about one out of every dozen I buy.

Thanks for the advice everyone, in the future i will be sure to open and check out everything i buy. I've been working everyday since i bought it but am planning on taking it back tommorow.
