Is dobro anything like doo-wah?

Nothing at all, fortunately.

A resophonic guitar, as they are now called (by those who do not want to get in trouble with Gibson's legal department, who now own the copyright to the name "dobro" and "Dobro"), is a type of guitar played horizontally (the guitar, not the player, although this is sometimes the case...). The guitar is fretted with a steel bar (the "steel") in the players left hand, and the strings are usually plucked using fingerpicks on the right hand.

Allison Krauss has become my favorite female artist. Her voice reminds me of a young Dolly Parton. Now I don't always agree with Dolly's choice of music but when she was younger her voice was phenomenal. And Allison also plays, writes and produces.

No, two different instruments. The dobro looks like a regular guitar, but is played horizontally. If you've ever een the Dixie Chicks perform, one of them plays a dobro. The pedal steel guitar, also known as the lap steel is played while seated. it doesn't have the traditional guitar shape.

Danny, a dobro is not a steel guitar. A dobro is an accoustic instrument suspended from the player's neck like a a six string guitar, but the face is pointed up with the strings toward the ceiling. A steel guitar is electrified, raised on legs like a piano and is played sitting down. A lot of folks who describe themselves as bluegrass fans don't know a dobro when they hear one.

Charlie: What's in the cigars you been smokin? Alison Krause sounds like Mother Maybelle? In my book (for vocal quality), AK gets a grade of B+ and MM gets a D. I don't even think her daughters (which is hard to listen to for more than 30 seconds) come close to AK.
