before there was power steering, there was a death knob.

it mounted on the steering wheel, with the knob on the inside of the wheel, usually at about 2 o'clock on the wheel.

sticking up from the mount was a knob that just fit your hand and it would turn easily. to turn your car, you grabbed the wheel and you could move the wheel with one hand. it also freed you right hand to drape over your dates shoulder and look for trouble.

it was called a death knob because many of them broke off while you were turning the wheel and you car was on it's own for a few moments. long enough to hit somethinmg and get killed.

these came with many different designs, the favorite was a colored lucite, or clear lucite with a bee imbedded in the lucite.

they ran 3 or 4 dollars.

for an extra buck and change, you could get one that would snap down flat inside the wheel at the touch of a button.

how's that for cool.

here are some on ebay

Those death knobs are dangerous as heck on cars with power steering.

I had a 70 Dodge Charger once (yes, just like the duke boys....blaze orange, but with a black landau top) with really SMALL steering wheel.

When I lost my power steering, I only had enough money for a deathknob. I put on the deathknob and drove like that for about a month until I found a new power steering pump at the junkyard.

I put on the new pump, and then drove away with my hand on the deathknob.

I went to change lanes at a low speed, and pulled on the knob....

...into the ditch, back out, back in, back out, and 100 meters of fishtails later I ended up in the right lane.

Yeah...that wasn't so fun.

Is the word Retro a joke? If it is not, i don't see it. I am trying realy hard to notice something Retro about the car.

My guess is he's talking about the sun visor and wheel covers he's got installed giving it the classic retro street rod look.

BTW, the mod I'd really like to see is a handle on the top and maybe some Spiderman or Archie graphics on the sides. Would totally look like a lunchbox then.

These cars are perfect in Tokyo.

The have the maximum amount of space available for parking garages and city parking lots.

In Tokyo they have these awesome parking garages where you pull your car into the single door and then get out. The car then gets whisked away on a conveyor like trolley up into the bowels of the building. You have a tab with a number on it when you leave.

When you come back you punch the number into the machine and after about a minute, your car suddenly appears in front of you. A ten story tall parking garage may only be as wide and thick as two cars, yet it will hold 50 cars.....pretty ingenious.

These cars were designed to fit perfectly into the garages and parking machines, while offering the most amount of space available.

This car of ricks probably looks tiny up close, but inside, it has an amazing amount of headroom, storage room, and room in general. Not to mention great visibility.

We could learn a lot from the Japanese. We should be building these cars too.

i will give you a hint. skirts and sun visors like that were popular in the 50's

in the 40's holes in the side wee very in and also i might add, tail fins. nothing cooler then a pink caddy convertable vintage 1959, last of the red hot mommas

I'll have to remember never to rent a Mustang in Tokyo then. The spot I park at in a garage at one office left pretty decent room on each side between two concrete pillars for my PT. With the Mustang, I have about 3" on each side and have to work to fit it in there and avoid a dumpster. Given that I go to that office after getting up at 3:30, I fear it's only a matter of time....

RICK - That's what I figured you were talking about, I just never heard it called a death knob. My brother had/has one on his truck. (semi tractor)

#9 Cushing -- Of course it's retro...look at the date.
