hog, nice pics

reminds me of my younger day. I started my AF career as a crew chief on F-4s then moved on to F-16s. Spent most of my time working in the test program at Edwards and Eglin but managed to squeeze in a short tour at Kunsan in '82. F-16 was a great plane to work on, especially after a couple years on the Phantoms.

Penzt I have Phantom Bites on my back that run over 3 inches long... and the fuel leaks ahhhh the days LoL

we went to 16's from F-4D's in 89... back then I said you can take two F-16's stuff under the Wings on the F-4 and she's haul her... I don't miss the Loading on the F-4 though.. first on the flight-line in the Morning and last to leave it at Night.... though the Years this F-16 has gained my faith in it... it also Can Haul the Mail... and like you said easy to work on and maintain... they keep coming up with new AC but I think this one is going to be around for a long long time... and to think the Guy who Built and Designed it.. did it behind the Sceens of the Government until it was ready to go to assembly...You were Stationed in some nice places there!!! I got 3 More to knock down and I am looking forward to the Retirement...

I really enjoyed my time on the flightline, despite the long hours and lousy conditions. But once I got promoted and I became an expediter, it pretty much sucked. 8 hours of driving a step van around in circles wasn't my idea of fun. So I retrained into Logistics plans (LGX).

I spent the next ten years working mostly as a mobility NCO. There was quite a bit of variety to the job so it was never boring. I got involved in all the deployments either building cargo pallets, loading cargo planes, or running the deployment control center.

When we weren't actively involved in exercises or deployments we were planning the next one. We also managed WRM and conducted a variety of training classes.

Mag.. Yep thats a Missile its actually on the underwing of the Jet... it's a AIM-9 Sidewinder

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is a supersonic, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile carried by fighter aircraft. It has a high-explosive warhead and an active infrared guidance system. The Sidewinder was developed by the US Navy for fleet air defense and was adapted by the U.S. Air Force for fighter aircraft use. Early versions of the missile were extensively used in the Southeast Asian conflict. In September 1958 Chinese Nationalist F-86s fired the first Sidewinder air-to-air missiles to down 11 communist Chinese MiG-17s over the Formosa Straits. Until that time, aircraft defensive means where primarily limited to pilots and tail gunners firing small caliber ammunition in dog-fight situations.

But today, if you talk to a few of the guys on this board they'll tell you the Aim-9 is used to down Civilian Aircraft and such...

The One you don't see that's on the Wingtip, is a AIM-120 AMRAAM Slammer , The AMRAAM weighs 340 pounds and uses an advanced solid-fuel rocket motor to achieve a speed of Mach 4 and a range in excess of 30 miles. In long-range engagements AMRAAM heads for the target using inertial guidance and receives updated target information via data link from the launch aircraft. It transitions to a self-guiding terminal mode when the target is within range of its own monopulse radar set. The AIM-120 also has a "home-on-jam" guidance mode to counter electronic jamming. With its sophisticated avionics, high closing speed, and excellent end-game maneuverability, chances of escape from AMRAAM are minimal. Upon intercept an active-radar proximity fuze detonates the 40-pound high-explosive warhead to destroy the target. At closer ranges AMRAAM guides itself all the way using its own radar, freeing the launch aircraft to engage other targets.

Kind of like the Fire and Forget... that way you can't see what the Airline Pilot was thinking before your Missile Interups his Day... And Believe it or not with this Advancment in Technology... these Actually Save Live's just like the Bomb on the wing there..

It's a GBU-12, The Guided Bomb Unit-12 (GBU-12) utilizes a 500-pound general purpose warhead. The operator illuminates a target with a laser designator and then the munition guides to a spot of laser energy reflected from the target.
Believe it or not this Weapon also Saved allot of Lives... used in CAS Missions the guy on the Ground Designated the Target with his Laser and the computer systems on the Jet picked up the Quardence from the ground troop's designator and honed in on the Enemy's Location... thus removing the Enemy and saving many lives by reducing a ground battle... Less Casualties that way... these Bombs can hit between 3 to 4 feet from there Designated Target... the Newer Bombs are GPS Guided and can hit within 3 to 4 inches of there Targets thus Less Civilian Casualties...
Just thought I would Share that information with you also... because it seems the US is being Portraid as a bad guy here... through the Years there has been Millions spent... making sure there are less Casualties and the Targets are Taken Out...

Thanks for asking Mag... Sorry for such a long discription LoL

Enjoy

Penzt, I also do the LGX... I am fulltime Guard.. here we wear many Hat's (thats what we call them) you know from your previous Job how much Weapons Equipment goes with the Jet... well not only am I Weapons Loader/Specialist, but myself and another guy's job is to pack up and load all our pallets when we go somewhere... I have been doing this for about 7 yrs now along with my reg AFSC... LoL and I have about 5 other hats to go with that... Clinton Era and Cutbacks was More with Less... and the Guard has not gotten out of that roll...But with the Pressures's on them with this new war and amount of people on active duty and away from there Civilian Jobs it is costing big time... Guy's are loosing there jobs ETC.
I love Loading them C-5's tho... I got a picture around here somewhere it has us loading a C-5 and in the Background under the wing of the C-5 a 141 is on Final Approach... I'll locate it and post it if you'd like??

hog,

you mentioned the AMRAAM AIM 120. I remember one of the very first live tests we did with the F-16 out at Holloman. It was a live rocket motor with no explosives. It didn't matter though. It locked on and scored a direct hit straight up the tail pipe. The drone guys at Holloman weren't too happy because it cost them an expensive chunk of hardware. It took out one of their remote control planes. The drone was some 1960-70 era century series fighter (F-105 or F-106 I think).

Working the test program was really cool because we got to do and see stuff most operational guys didn't. I worked on some of the first prototype YF-16s. The plane has really changed since the original concept of being a light weight air to air fighter. The earliest ones didn't even have stations to hang weapons pylons. It could only carry missles and fuel tanks.

yea the Aim-120 is a nice piece of Hardware...

and to think nowadays they are pulling the old F-4's out of the bone yard for drones... Then you have seen the F-16 with the Wings anchord to the ground and then Bent straight up and held in those positions for a month or so?? that is really something with the Material and things of nowaday tech. to try that with the old F-4 you would have a Major Fuel Spill!!! LoL

do you know a guy by the name Jim Pedigo?
