Question: do your cigars ever have a faint, but noticeable burnt plastic taste to it? I've detected this in a couple of my premiums and worried it might be due to my humidification unit...could it be putting out this flavor? (It is a Havana Mist passive unit). Or, is this a 'phase' in aging some cigars, or a sign of underage?

Curious if anyone has thoughts on this. I don't care for it (obviously), and want to avoid further such tastes, if possible.

Nope....can't say I ever noticed a plastic taste.

Never had that happen to me. Do you taste it before you light it? Is it a flavor on the wrapper or in the binder or filler you will only taste once lit?

Could be the humi unit. Is it a PG/water mix?
Could also be that you aren't "airing" out your humi at least once a week? Sometimes gases will build up and give off odors that are really bad. This occurs as part of the aging process, especially with "young" cigars. What kind of container are they in? Don't know John, I've not had this happen before. What is the cigar?

I only notice it when lit, usually about 1/3 of the way down. Not on the wrapper pre-light.

This has happened to an Opus X (Double Corona), a PAN Diplomatico, and a few other middle of the road cigars. Not necessarily 'underaged' cigars to start with, methinks.

The humidification unit has PG in it, and I'd been experimenting with adding more to get humidity to 67% (where I prefer the smoke).

They are in a humidor, so not getting it from tupperware. And I certainly air it out...smoking from it every day or two.

I'm stumped John. Send me those Opus and PAMs and I'll "test" them myself !!! It's just not right those are tasting like plastic, they're FAKES!! Send them to me!
Put them in another humi for a while and see if that helps.

The cello off is the first thing I thought of too John! A couple things come to mind though I can't say with any certainty. You're adding more PG? Is that good? Does the PG have any discernable odor that you would associate with the taste? Is your humidor varnished under the Spanish cedar? Could be crummy varnish that didn't cure well. Or more likely, are there any wood resins under the spanish cedar? I experimented with a pine box and didn't seal the interior well enough. The spanish cedar sucked the resin out of the wood! I resealed it with poly. It's fine now.

It's not from the PG.
The humidor is the most logical cause, whether it be the finish (varnish) or resin.
What "plastic" does it taste like?
Does it smell like a burning candle? Or like a wet urethane (furniture finish)?
Knowing the type will help determine the source.
In the meantime, do you have another humidor? Does this only happen in one specific humidor? Were all these smokes purchased from the same place?
We'll get to the bottom of this.
And yes, I was going to mention the cello but I'm much too late...

Several points:

1. I vote for the humidor being the problem.

2. Cello is always off, never on!

3. Send me some of the super premiums and I will test them for you.

Check if it's one of those bubble gum cigars. I don't think you're supposed to smoke them.

I've moved the cigars to another humidor...just happened to have upgraded to a larger unit. And the new humidor has a cigar oasis, so it will circulate air, etc., and hopefully rid the cigars of plasticky tone.

It tastes like what I imagine burning tupperware would taste like...not like varnish. I wonder about glue, now that you mention it, but the humidor 'looks' fine. Looks may be deceiving?

The cigars have been purchased from a few different places, so that is not the problem.

It is a faint flavor, by the way, not overpowering. Taste is on the finish, not when you first draw on the cigar...an aftertaste of sorts.

I am hoping that the new humidor will rid the cigars of this flavor. Any other thoughts always appreciated, of course.

I've had that ODD plastic taste, too... but I was SURE to remove the wrapper....LOL, LMFAO, still LOL!...................................................

REMOVE any 'plastic' or rubber substance within 45' of it or you....good luck, LOL!

I had an old girlfriend that used to complain of that odd "plastic taste" in the old "safe" days before marriage. Since marriage, there are NO complaints of odd tastes... plastic or otherwise...
