Just curious...did you stay in Kaneohe in Oahu? I stayed in the cabins there at the MCAS a few years ago. Something like 30 bucks a day. It was the most beautiful setting and boy did I feel safe with all those U.S. Marines around! Can't beat that! HOORAH!

Hate to but in here, but I have to add my thoughts. I grew up in Kaneohe and grew up surfing the KMCAS known just as "Base" to us kids. I also worked for six years on the Base training Marine Mammals and surfed Pyramid Rock, North Beach and Zodiacs which is right by that little offshore island called Kekepa Island that sits offshore of the cabins. Man, those were the days.......

I tell you! My big bro was stationed there and my husband and I'd take our kids to the cabins. My bro's in Jacksonville, Fl now. Not quite the same! The base is the first place my son ever snorkled. Our daughter now dives with us, she's 15. Next year, we might think about letting our son take lessons. He's a knuckle head though and I may have him wait another year. We travel to tropical places to dive. I'll NEVER dive in San Diego again. It really sucks! The Coronado Islands off of Mexico are good. Saw my first wild sea lions there! No sharks, although I'd like to see one. Only problem is, we got the whites, makos and blues out here. Too scary for me! Thanks for the reply!

I also worked at Point Loma for awhile and through work we did quite a bit of diving off of Imperial Beach, Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs and outside San Diego Harbor. This was my first experience in cold water and was nothing like Hawaii, but I thoroughly enjoyed the diving and have a HUGE abalone shell as a momento. Of course we all got ear infections due to the harbor water and the sewage outfall offshore of the Sunset Cliffs, such is life. Aloha....

We stayed at Bellows Air Force Station, just down the road from K Bay. I was also stationed in Hawaii (Hickam AFB) for six years from 91-97. I retired a couple of years ago at Langley AFB, VA. We had I nice little two-bedroom cabin. It was a family reunion of sorts. My brother and his wife joined us and I had my son fly in from Texas. We had a great time, smoked a bunch of cigars and drank a bunch of booze.

Bellows in Waimanalo is also a great beach to hang out at with the kids. I'm going home for Christmas and as you did, I'm looking forward to a few cigars down at the beach.

Oh yeah, we went there to check it out. Real nice cinderblock buildings. Not so 'cabin-ish'. I'd definitely go there again, only it was a bit windy.
