The moral of the troops is a key ingredient to success. Please try to argue this point.

Only narrow minded buffoons would look at the by-product as the headline. And the fact that an intelligent and gutsy decision can be used for political gain is simply a by-product.

I've said it before, but it begs repeating: President Bush could find the cure to cancer and the liberal schmucks would claim it was simply for political gain.

I thought philosophers had an open mind. Apparently they only open towards the left.

Hog, I totally agree. I try to pay respect to everyone’s opinion, but in this case I believe yours has a bit more validity. As someone who has “been there done that” I believe your point of view on this is more valid than someone who hasn't. Thanks hog for "being there" in ’99, I’m sure you did our country proud while you were there, just like our troops are currently doing us proud now.

Who else has paid their dues and wants to add their opinion? Would a president flying 40 hours round trip, spending time away from their family, serving YOU food, and speaking to you or your peers raise your spirits?

Oh hell, I might as well wade into this one too. I think it was a really cool thing for the president to visit with the troops. It's always a cool thing when a president spends time with the troops but even more so in times of conflict. I've been in the presence of both the first President Bush and President Clinton while stationed in Hawaii. They each gave a speech, shook a few hands, waved to the crowd, and posed for photos. It's what presidents do when they visit military bases. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. I'm not one of those people who gets a big thrill out of shaking someone's hand. But I still respect the fact that they made the effort to show support for the men and women in uniform.

Are the men and women of the military being used as someone has suggested? Of course they are. The armed forces are instruments of political power. Politicians have used the military to further their careers as long as there have been politicians and armed forces. I spent 21 years in uniform. I didn't serve a politician, I served my country. It's the politicians that decide who and when we'll fight. Hopefully, they're also serving their country when they make those decisions.

Fortunately, most of our fellow countrymen have learned to separate the war from the warriors. The military folks deserve our respect and support even if people publicly disagree with the politicians over the merits of the military action.
