I always think that threads like these just provide an excuse for someone who wants to use a racial epithet to go ahead and use them in an "ironic" fashion. I was told by a black friend one time that he would rather be slurred to his face by someone who was proud to be a racist then have a so-called friend talk about him behind his back. Made sense to me.
