how many local officals retire in their 40s or 50s and take a job the next town over as fire chief, police chief etc? or move to any other private, local, state or federal job and draw 1-2 pensions plus new salaries? not sustainable, sorry.

A small business owner screwing around on CBid on and off during work hours for a period of time leads to the businesses demise.

Public employee doing the same gets a collectively bargained raise at the end of the year.

It's age 56 for ATC genius. But the 56 age is when you have to stop working live traffic, not stop working. You could supervise or work in other "ATC" jobs.

To retire as a special categorry (ATC, Firefighter, Police) you have to have 25 years actively doing the job(live traffic, patrol, fighting fires), and you can retire as early as age 50. If you have any unpaid lost time, if you have time doing other administrative jobs, if you loose your medical clearance and don't have 25 years good time then you can't retire. Don't be mad, get a job that has a pension. I will have 2 of them by age 56 or 59, 3 if SS is still solvent.

You don't have a clue what you are talking about. The stupidity and incessant talking point BS is why, I really have stayed away from this place.

I 100% agree there is lots of waste in the government, but it is the nature of it (has to do with legislated fairness mostly, but if you don't get it then there is no point in explaining). I would love to see it reduced. What I don't agree with is the blanket statements about all government workers. It's just ignorant. Plain and purely ignorant.

As far as contempt for the tax payers? Who receives the services? The taxpayer. I also pay my own salary with my taxes? And?????? I like my job because I like the job. It isn't the salary or future pension. I enjoy serving the public and I do my job, with that in mind.

Like usual, you and many others sound bitter. If you are so unhappy, move to a place where you can save money, retire earlier, or whatever. Get a government job, get a state job. Start your own company and retire when you want.

Both sets of grandparents retired.

Fathers side: Grandpa worked in shipyards (Portland and Seattle areas) for 30+ years since he was barely out of college. He retired around 60 with a pension and lived within his means. Grandma was a teacher for about the same. Then she went into administration. Retired a little before grandpa. Not a big pension, but lived within their means and had saved and planned properly.

Mothers side: Grandpa sold insurance at a private company since he was 19. Retired partially st age 59, then worked part time until 61 then ully retired. Grandma retired early on a pension from Crescent Foods a private company, took a reduced pension.

They are my example. The thing is most people cannot afford to retire at age 56, it isn't an all expenses paid pension. You have to plan and save accordingly.

I don't know when I am going to retire, but it sure as hell ain't gonna be in my late 60's.

The other thing is that it is a very TINY part of the federal system that actuall retire early.

All grandparents lived or are still living well into their 80's.

I believe there has to be adjustments, but I am not going to talk about them right now. (ATC climate).

Couple points:

1. Intracacies aside, mid 50's is too young. Period. No need to elaborate.

2. The contempt for tax payers is real. You say you "pay taxes". But you actually don't. Sure, you see less money in each paycheck, but the government pays you from the money earned outside the governement. If you'd like me to explain this further, let me know. I think you can figure it out.

3. I'm debating a topic. I'm not bitter.

And since you obviously didn't know it, I am a business owner of a small manufacturing company. But I can't "retire when I want". That statement alone proves that you are out of touch with reality, if not being overly defensive here.

thats great your grandparents lived within their means, but how many young people do you think are going to do that? not that im a whole lot better but im better than most my age i know. i only owe on my house, my TV i just bought about a grand on my CCs. I need a new riding mower but im going to wait till i pay off my tv. (three years no % is tough to pass up)

the bottom line isnot matter how you want to spin it is that we as a country and individuals have been living on credit for many years. we have attempted to spend our way out of bankruptcy and of course that has failed. you can say anything you want but the country will not be able to continue to fund these kinds of benefits. its reality, it sucks, sorry.

another thought is the GM employees had the same mentality and look where it got them.
