I used to keep a large tortoise. That box that they live is may look easy/cheap to make, but there's a lot more that goes into one than you may think.

supports

light fixutures

bulbs (both UV flouresent and spots)

heating elements

power strips

silicone (to seal the joints)

casters if you ever want to move it

The one I kept my Sulcata in was 8' x 8' x 2' with four 4' flouresents, two spots, and two more heating elements. I used pool filter sand for the substrate (10 bags) as well as an assortment of landscape rock for structure.

When all was done and totalled, I'd say I was well over $250 for the materials alone.
