Buddy Rich, I used to watch him when I was a kid and was in awe. Amazing what he could do on the drums.

Peart doesn't just play the kit he writes the lyrics. What a talented musician.

It's a little known fact that Bonzo would usually add drums to the music that Plant, Page and Jones recorded after listening to it. Talk about talent...

I believe I read that in "Hammer of the Gods, The Led Zeppelin Saga".

Great book.

For a great, albiet posthumously arranged, showcase of Bonzo's talent, check out Moby ******/Bonzo's Montreaux. It was released on one of the early zep "boxed sets" or something.....available on Bearshare, and very cool.

Beat...

I totally forgot Gene Krupa. I would add Art Blakey to my list as well...since I already have four here is the fifth (by the way, considering blakey and Krupa aren't really rock drummers my five are in no particular order) Number 5: Jon Fishman from Phish. He makes Lars Ulrich sound like a brass monkey 🙂

lukin,

Fishman is a monster!!! ( I love Phish, listening to "Rift" as I type this)

Lars is a very unique drummer. He does things nobody else does in terms of fill placement.

There was a project a few years back that was basically a tribute to Mr. Rich. Various drummers playing Rich pieces. The story coming from that was Peart had the hardest time with what he was supposed to do. It seems if he doesn't come up with the groove, he has a hard time. It took multiple takes to get his parts right were most of the other performers nailed on the first or second take. The producers were very inumpressed with Mr Peart.

MANY drummers right lyrics and even sing. Gil Moore of Triumph comes to mind, as well as Don Henley (Eagles) Kelly Keggie (Night Ranger). Hell I even wrote lyrics and sang a few tunes in a band I was in years back. Not all the difficult. I dont mean to piss on the Peart lovers cheerios but he isnt all that much better than anyone else mentioned here. He was lucky enough to be in RUSH were they let him just do whatever. There are a lot of drummers with skills as good or better that are in bands/projects that dont allow them to go off like he did. Hell I bet most of you dont know that Steve Smith of Journey fame is one of the best jazz players around today. He is freakin amazing. Ya never would have guessed by what he did with Journey.

beat, you're the second person i've heard (seen) talk about journey's drummer. my air force recruiter told me he once saw him do a drum solo at a concert and for the first 4 or 5 minutes or so he only played with his feet. my recruiter was also a drummer. he, too, was unimpressed with peart.

another musician i knew really liked king crimson's drummer. was it bill bruford or something like that? i don't really feel like googling right now. i heard some of his stuff on discipline, and it was definitely out there. that group went a totaly different direction from other rock bands. they had a bizarre album before they picked up belew(sp?) that had a title like "larks in aspic" or something like that. man, that was freaky stuff to me. it was just out there.

. . . that little smiley face down at the bottom was a hint that I was kidding. . . . John Rutsey was the drummer on Rush's first album . . . .

That reminds me of a funny scene from "fast times" . . . When Mike tells Rat to play Led Zeppelin four to set the mood on his date, and in the next scene, he's driving with the girl, and Kashmir (from a diff. album) is playing. . . . .

. . . you know, reading that, I realize there's something a little strange about reading that two men played "Moby ******" together. . . . . .
