Being a pipe noob myself, I have tried my cob with and without the filter. I tend to like it better with the filter removed. Gets a bit dirtier, but it's nothing a pipe cleaner can't fix. And I do think there is a diff., the filter seems to hold more of the flavor from the last tobacco you smoked, I think. And I don't have dedicated pipes for each blend so it gets mixed around.
