The Weber is ok..

I have a Turbo four burner with flame tamer briquets. Had it for almost 10 yrs. It cost more but the Weber won't last near as long.

Bill,

The old BBQ Galore units were much better and heavier built than the new ones. When the founders sold out to Chinese conglomerate about a decade or so ago, stuff went downhill.

I discovered this when I went to buy parts for a 4 burner Cook-On that I had bought back around 96 when the original owners were still running it. The part quality of the newer stuff just paled in comparison.

My Genesis E-320 (the last of the 3 burner models where the burners ran left to right) is going on 8 years now, and it's holding up better than the Cook-On did at that point in it's life. So far, the only thing that has worn down on the weber is the flavorizer bars, which was to be expected. I could probably go another 5 years before replacing them, maybe longer, I would guess.

Out of the box, the Cook-On did get way hotter much faster, but I fixed that by re-jetting the propane orifice nozzles on the Weber to a larger size.

I don't know. I looked at the Webber units.

The CharBroil unit I'm ditching was a cheap 4+1 burner unit. Spent about the same on it. It lasted me 7 years and was still going. Now it needed new flame defusers and electric starter. They were going to cost like $100. So the parts cost was a high percentage of the price of a new unit. And it looked like a 7 year old grill.

Anyway, with this second unit, I still haven't spent as much as the comparable Webber, say the e-330 @$799.

Why Webber? Do they last 14 years and not need parts? I'm trying to envision that they do a better job of grilling, but all we use it for is steaks, burgers, veggies, maybe some salmon....

Now I figure I'm going to get slapped around here for not knowing Webber.
Slap way....

I see lots of 20 year old Weber genesis grills out here that are still on their original parts.

You think they are a better value in the long run?

Yes, I do.

But like anything else, to an extent it depends on how one uses it, how it one takes care of it and what conditions it's stored in. If it's going to get thrashed and neglected, nothing is going to last and in the end you'll just be pissed you spent more and it still died. A little bit of care (like a simple cover) for a grill goes a long way.

I do think Weber gassers are worth the extra money. If you go to a Home Depot or Lowes and look at them side by side with the Charbroil, Stok, Brinkmann, Masterflame or other lower cost brand, it becomes apparent what you're paying for, lift the lid, it's solid construction, the others, they wobble. Bodies are heavy castings vs thin stamped sheet metal. Go to the parts isle, pick up a replacement Weber burner and pick up a replacement burner for the other brands, the Weber stainless is thicker and heavier.

My 2-yen anyway...

Ok, I can see that. It is obvious to me that the Webbers are built to a better standard.

I could have put a few parts on my old one, but the real issue was optics; the wife has been crabbing for a year now to get a shiny new grill. Ours sits out back and does get a bit of weathering......

Top o' the afternoon, people.

Slept late, went to the gym late, then just bought myself a new saltwater rod/reel. Shimano reel, had it spooled up with 40 lb test for a fishing trip later this month... and likely another in September with delta1.

I love fishing... and they say the yellowtail and Dorado are within 5-10 miles and big.

About to fire up the grill and a cigar. Maybe a cocktail, maybe some red wine too. Need a relaxing Sunday night.

Easy dinner tonight. We are tring out Boar Head Franks. With that Gray Coupon mustard (which is a silly name cause in not really gray).
Our usual is Hebrew National, which we really like. But ya gotta branch out.

Good point there. Let me revise that:

About to fire up the grill, having a cocktail now and have already picked out a red wine to accompany the steaks.

I use charcoal, so I steered clear of the grill discussion earlier.

Meh, I find the whole charcoal vs gas debate comical at times.

I have gas, charcoal, logs and pellet. They all have their niche.

Could not agree more ^^^. I used gas for years, then moved back to charcoal about 6 years ago. I have it dialed in for our current tastes right now, but who knows the next time I need a grill?

Not an argument worth having. If you like it, do it.
