I don't think it's smoke and mirror. It's just a matter of how much risk are you comfortable with and how much do you want to pay to mitigate it. They charge for it but there still is a benefit. Whether the benefit is worth it or necessary is personal preference to an extent.

To each his own but the insurance co would not offer it if it was not in their best interests. They have the quants to back it up.

I know someone in the p&c industry.

USAA continues to be the platinum standard.

Everybody else chasing them.

May be but they just kept getting more expensive......even with no tickets and no wrecks by me or the wife it just went up annually.I dropped them, went with a Texas company called Germania..........They have it all now, house, household goods, cars and it cost me half what USAA wanted.I do however have a couple very low interest credit cards with USAA......in that category on Navy Federal has a better deal.

Jus my .02

The industry has been taking a beating. All are taking additional rate in Home & Auto.

Frequency and severity of storms over the last four years have many companies reporting loses.

Buying insurance is like buying cars. You probably don't have the cheapest model out there. Why not?

Btw, the guy in the industry I know does not work for USAA. He just knows the customer satisfaction stats.

Of course not. Iffn' you can self insure the averages say you will win financially but most folks can't take that chance. Thus there is insurance.

It hailed here on Monday. Noticed damage to both vehicles Tuesday. Called USAA Wed. Adjuster called Wed PM and came to house on Fri. Checks mailed Saturday and in my account exactly one week after the hail storm. And they (USAA) couldn't care less if we actually have the work done or not...my car will live with the dents.....they'll care if/when we total one of the vehicles, but not otherwise

- they also set us up with local body shop next to my mechanic for the work on wife's car at appraised damage (less deductible)...AND reserved rental with Enterprise

I couldn't be happier
