Did you try lyft? Greyhound/Amtrak does a pretty sweet cross-country I'm told... get yourself a sleeper car... or just dodge the bulls and jump on hobo style...

So... I think I need to work on my text message tact. I've been told that bad news is generally hard to take and sometimes it's better to approach it obliquely. I don't think I do that well.

Received a text message from my friend yesterday... she is letting me know that a mutual friend (twin of one of my teammates) passed away at 30. She was a close friend while I lived in DC, dating one of the players, sister to another, we hung out a lot. We hadn't talked a lot since she moved to NYC and had a falling out with some others.

So... I texted the woman... "H- died".... that may have been too abrupt a text...

So... I text a teammate from DC living in SF, also close to her brother "You brought in on H- yet?"... that may have been too obtuse... because his response was "No, she ok?"... Which obviously my answer is..."No."... maybe not the best way to approach this...

So... determined to get this right, 3rd time is a charm, I text an old friend in Seattle who is currently a teammate of her brother... I want to make sure he has friends looking out for him there, as his family is all out east... "J- did you hear about M-' s sister?"... "Fxxk, what? That's never a good opener.".... hmmm.... maybe 3rd time wasn't the charm.

Anyway.... to get to the point of this story... H-, M-'s sister has died.

(Was that better guys?)

Brother, I think before working on your texting skills, You should work on showing your empathy skills first. Get that down and the texting messaging tact will fall in line naturally. Oh wait, never mind... It is a hopeless cause I forgot its Vic we talking about.

Correction,

Vic your friends know you are a Prick. To deny one's self and all that jazz. Just keep being you 🇨🇮

Victor, I think the way you deal with death is very much in keeping with your beliefs about the meaning of life...

I would've been disturbed if you'd come on here talking about how your friend was taken too soon, how life is precious and sacred.... or even worse, if you'd called and offered to pray with your friends...

You have a system of beliefs... if you violate it over something like death, you're bound to end up as crazy as Nietzsche...

Had a craving for some French onion soup.

I don't like soup.

But it sounded good. So cooking the onions down right now, should be about an hour and then I'll turn em into soup.

Coworkers gonna love me

It's good to cook beef in it, too. I use dry onion soup as a rub for brisket sometimes. It's good.

Sprinkled blue cheese crumbles on top of the soup, then covered them with a slice of toasted french bread. Then topped all that with some Gruyere before broiling to crisp the outer cheese layer.

It was fantastic.

3 Vidalia onions
half stick butter
5 garlic cloves
cup of fresh sliced mushrooms
pinch - tsp or so thyme and black pepper

Simmer all that for about an hour to hour and a half in a Dutch oven until onions are caramelized.

Stir in a fistful of flour to thicken a bit once caramelized

then

32oz beef broth
cup of dry white wine
cup of water

Dump all that on top when onions are cooked, then let it simmer another 30-40 minutes uncovered

Cheese and bread it up, eat.
