Leniency is not the answer. CA has already reduced drug possession to a citation. Read a little about AB-109, Prop 47, and Prop 57. We're letting criminals get away with crime. Property crimes have increased a lot, and homelessness has, too.
Why? Because the guys we're letting out are such losers that even their own families are sick of their sh*t.
Some guy steals your car... gets sentenced to 3 years... he'll be out in a week with no probation or parole. Just like he served his whole term. Zero consequences.
In criminal justice class we learned that in order for a punishment to be effective, it must be 1. Certain 2. Swift and 3. Severe. Our justice system is NONE of those things, which is why criminals don't give 2 craps about following the law... BUT in jail they follow the jailhouse rules set up by their fellow criminals... because if they dont, they get the sh*t kicked out of them, right NOW. Certain. Swift. And severe.
