My understanding is hospital understaffing is a fairly consistent problem across the board

Part of the problem, at least in my experience, is that you never know what the census or acuity is going to be. Some days we need 3 nurses, some days we need 7.

Tonight we need 6 or 7. We have 4. We have the only ICU beds open in the hospital, so we're going to get all the admissions. It's gonna be a rough night.

Even when one dies, often the bed gets refilled before it's even cooled off.
