Sweden's death rate is higher than neighboring and most other countries

I had just heard that Sweden did not lock down and that their epidemiologists were focusing more on sheltering the at risk and developing herd immunity.

They do still have some restrictions, no groups of more than 50 being one of them. Schools, bars and restaurants still open.

You're right on most of that. I think the "herd immunity" concept has been added in by some rightwing anchor though.
The swedish public health agency has themselves stated they are not trying to achieve herd immunity.

somehow this fantasy of herd immunity got started and it's been popping up on Fox a lot now.

who are you gonna believe?

the conservative media is promoting what would be best for businesses and corporate interests, without regard for the working people upon whom many of those businesses rely for their work forces...their advocacy does not include data from educated medical experts and practitioners ...and seems to avoid the actual human toll this pandemic has caused, in just the opening round...

hardly ever see any epidemiologist, emergency medical practitioners, public health experts or scientists who've studied pandemics in conservative media advocating for business as usual...only conservative economists, aligned with industry, and political opinion generators and shapers...they all tout their anti government, anti science, anti social contracts beliefs...it is this pro personal liberty and freedom and let everyone fend for themselves philosophy which allows big business and corporate interests to thrive and prosper...

then the media on the left seem to have a glut of gloom and doom scientists, public health experts, epidemiologists, emergency medical practitioners, and give constant updates on the numbers of infected people and the deaths, and all the bad things the virus does to the human body if you're lucky to survive...all from the perspective that we as a society are in this together and can better protect each individual if we band together and do what is in the interests of the society...barely acknowledging the disastrous effect on businesses and corporate interests...

who do you believe? those who care about businesses....... or those who care about people's health?

Corporate interest got taken care of in the stimulus packages. Small businesses and independent contractors are scratching to survive. We killed them and handed everything to big business. Both the Rs and the Ds did this.

I want to know when Sweden got redefined as no longer a socialist country?

I've been on this board long enough to remember them being lumped in with all those "socialist countries" in Europe.

I don't really know the detail about what Sweden is doing. I'd have admit I was being an internet warrior expert to say I did. I have been looking at interesting data out of New Zealand though. It's all preliminary and I don't know what to make of it.

it was mentioned back when the UK announced it would not lock-down in March.

after a week or two of dramatic increases in number of infections, the Brits changed their minds and locked down near the end of March...

people say herd immunity because it is easy to say...but never mention the costs of achieving it

All most of us are doing is googling a bunch of stuff and trying to sift through what's real information and what isn't. You're about the only one who has real data sets distributed to them.

New Zealand declared they won. I want to use them as an example, but it's not too fair being an island.

Of course... our only two neighbors probably contracted the COVID from us... so we could have theoretically done the same thing and even saved Mexico and Canada a little pain while we were at it.

But they some people define sarcasm differently... they seem to define it as being totally serious about something until you're proven to be an idiot, and then you were just sarcastic.

So I can get how they would have missed this.

Looking stuff up on the internet, digesting it and forming your own opinions is cool. I do it too. As long as you recognize that doesn't give you the ability to out think the experts on it (not referring to me) who have been looking at similar at a much deeper level for years.

I try to say when I'm coming at things from what I am seeing through direct reports or through data as opposed to through the interwebs. They carry different weight to me.

Looking at the internet to learn, being wary of sources is one thing. Regurgitating someone elses nonsense as your own or throwing it out and expecting someone to counter it otherwise it is true is another.

every single one say this is more serious than the flu, tell me to keep my azz at home...without effective meds and other treatments, and until vaccines - hopefully...non-contact is the best defense

I'm truly scared to fly to the Cleveland Clinic. I have to go though. Drive 12 hours each way or fly. I've not canceled my flights yet but leaning that way. I do have some issues I'm worried about or I'd cancel.

The flights are all wonky. Instead of flying in and flying out or flying in staying a night and flying out I have to fly in a day before, 2 nights in a hotel and fly home. The flights were direct but are now through midway with layovers.

Driving 12 hours and staying in a hotel then going to appointments and driving home 12 more aint much fun either. Especially since things aint quite right at the moment and I don't know if it is the ticker or something else.

But wrong thread. The teddubbya is a noob and thread jacking. Sorry Spey

I should go get tested...

I think I got it back in early-mid December then finally kicked its ass ... in January... It was really really BAD...

How much $$$ was the test?

Do you need a Dr. Referral or perscription to get one?

They appear the be "voluntarily" social distancing. Surveys apparently put public transportation at a reduction, and people are self reporting that they stay 1M apart. The numbers don't appear to be going up for them, but they also aren't going down. Time will only tell if that was a good decision or not.

Numbers say their infection rate (per MM) isn't particularly good or bad. Their fatalities are higher, and reports are they are only testing people who show severe symptoms (this would account for higher fatality rate).

No one knows. They certainly aren't really any closer to herd immunity than anyone else... even with reduced testing they are only running about 2k cases/1MM people. Double that... triple that... multiply it by 10... whatever you want to it, you're not near herd immunity.

victor809 wrote:

If the virus is as contagious as claimed, why wouldn't they be closer to herd immunity?
We shelter ourselves away because we're told we shouldn't contract it.
They have nightly golden shower contests.
You'd think more people would get the virus and if they don't die then they'd be part of the cool herd.

Your statement makes zero sense, implies a belief in conspiracy theories, and in general has made us all stupider for having read it.
