Early on in the pandemic, several staff members were exposed to an initially asymptomatic patient who was in for unrelated issues.
They continued to come into work not knowing the exposure. It was concurrent with our first known case who came in clearly symptomatic and appropriately isolated.
About 10 days after that patient was admitted, the hospital implemented the temp check stations and universal mask policy. Several staff members were found coming in with symptoms and temps and sent home. Then a huge number of call offs and entry-rejected due to temps and symptoms. They were already exposed, and now infected but trying to come in to work because they need the paycheck. I get it. I've gone to work sick as fxck innumerable times. If I call off, it affects my annual raise and ability to use vacation time. So fxck em, I'm working. Hell, I've barfed out my truck window and chit my pants en route to work before. Normal annual raise is 2%, but if you have no call offs and work overtime you can get 3%. If you have call offs and stuff it gets reduced to 1 or 0 depending on the number. And if you have call offs, they cancel approved vacation time.
Something around 100 people were quarantined and 3 units in the hospital completely closed. Many were still working after the temp stations were implemented, showing no signs. But the mask policy cut down on transmission, didn't see much after that was implemented. I don't know how many patients got it from our staff. There's several who were in prior to our first two who were in for unrelated issues that developed covid during their stay or came back after discharge with a positive swab.
Patient zero eventually got worse and ultimately died (I was in the room with that patient when they died). As did a staff member who got it from the asymptomatic patient, and their kid, and ther mother. The other staff who ended up on vents have made it off, with only one kinda in limbo on how or if they're going to recover fully.
Universal masking is much more effective than temp screens. But, we're still doing temp screens and if they want to pay me overtime to write temps on green stickers to hand to staff, I'm down.
