Meh, I'm certainly not going to decide what statue is or is not offensive to someone, not when it is regarding something which would never have impacted my life.

we have the cbid proximity rule that cedes power of opinion to geographical factors.
Locals are expected to have a better understanding than us distant rubes.

do we need a cbid proximity rule 1.a that cedes power to explain offense to the actual offended race?
shouldn't genetic proximity to a particular race have a better understanding than us distant cousins?

attempting truth in jest...calm down.

Well all the white folk in here sure have figured out there is no racism, certainly no systematic racism and that the black folk don’t experience what they say they do. So alls ok they just need to stfu.

It is weird statue by design. Kneeling with shackles is shocking and that is the point! Is there anyone here that read uncle Tom's cabin? That book was used by God to effect repentance, war and greatness in the ending of slavery. The book is excellent in its visceral revelation of the horrors of slavery. The statue attempts to capture that visceral revelation. I believe its actually holy. Which as a protestant is weird to find in art.
And yes we have the blood of the civil war to prove systemic racism doesn't exist. The statue also proclaims that. Which is why the dems want it down. Imho. But please read uncle Tom's cabin if you haven't you will be blessed or read it again

1 last thought on the emancipation statute weirdness-
The slave is in the position of honor and Lincoln the place of dishonor. This is something you can discover if you open your self up to the beautiful art of Uncle Tom's cabin.
Send me your addy vic. I'm smoking some good stuff right now

um. I am not sure what you're talking about regarding "place of dishonor" vs "position of honor"... and I'm not sure I want to try to decipher it.

and I don't send anyone my address here.

It's more curious that you're attributing anything to what I said. Sort of a Rorschach Test of its own

I said he was kneeling in front of Lincoln. A factual statement of a physical position someone is in. I did not intend to imply he was on an upward or downward trajectory. Perhaps I would have been better suited to say "on his knees in front of Lincoln", but we don't do a lot of editing here.

I don't actually have a perspective on the statue itself. I don't know anything about the history, the artist's statements or anything like that. You chose to believe I had a perspective. And you chose to have the opposite perspective.

I'd be curious, answer honestly, did you even know that statue existed before the BLM protests started talking about it this month? I didn't, which is why I attempted to make a relatively neutral statement "that's a weird statue"... It wasn't meant to mean anything more than... It's weird. There's a dude on his knees in front of another and I'm not sure I get what they're trying to say fully.

Did you decide to interpret it as a freed slave rising up because the BLM protesters didn't like it, or because you thought I saw it in a negative light?

victor809 wrote:

You claim that you don't have a perspective on the statue yet you used the word “weird” to describe it (“That's a weird statue”). I wouldn't say that is a neutral statement. A neutral statement would be “That's a statue.” You used “weird” to further describe the statue and your impression is that it's “weird.” You then say that you don't get what they're trying to say fully. Are you so shallow that you get no other impression or meaning of the statute other than it's weird? You are clearly an opinionated person and claim to be rather intellectual so I fail to believe that you have no further opinion or perspective on the statue.

As to my interpretation of the statue, I think it kinda speaks for itself and it's been around a lot longer than the BLM. Here's my take on it. Abraham Lincoln, the president that issued the Emancipation Proclamation, standing with an outstretched hand above a slave who's bonds are broken. The now freed man is rising to join him, not crouching or cowering in his shadow. The word "Emancipation" is even cast into the base of the statue. Without making some stupid **** up and twisting yourself in knots, I don't see any other interpretation or meaning.

As to whether I knew the statute existed prior this past month or two - Yes. As you may know, I live in MA. When I first moved here and when friends and family visit sometimes we go into Boston. I've been on a bunch of the tourist trap tours that they have: The Freedom Trail, the Duck Boats... A replica of this statue currently stands in Boston (at least until the BLM have their way and get it taken down) and it is a stop on some of the historical tours. The statue is located in Park Square which is near the Boston Public Garden and the Back Bay. So yes, I have known of the statue well before the BLM ever came around.

I would think "weird" is a pretty neutral term when describing a statue with positioning that one doesn't at first glance find easily discernible.

Hell, look at DG's posts.... he interprets it as weird by design with an intent to be shocking. He also reads something into Lincoln as "sitting" as being a position of dishonor... so I have no idea there.

Weird in this case means there's something intentional about the positioning of the individuals in it, but I don't have enough knowledge to fully understand the intent of the positioning. If it were two people standing like most statues, I would have said "That's a statue".

Do you think everything you attribute as "weird" is negative? That kind of says a bit about you as well.

As for something being around a lot longer than BLM.... that's not an affidavit to it not having anything problematic about it. Uncle Tom's Cabin (since it was brought up) was around a lot longer than either BLM or this Lincoln statue and there are plenty of people who have found things about that novel problematic.

I appreciate the thought, but I don't like to allow my address out. :)

Anyway, your interpretation of the statue and Uncle Tom based on a Christian perspective is only accurate if the person designing the statue and/or the people requesting the statue were also viewing it from that perspective. Otherwise it's a perspective which, while meaningful to you, is not necessarily the intent.

**caveat, I have no idea how religious the designer of said statue was. And I have no idea whether the recently freed slaves had already adopted the christianity of their former masters, or if that came later in history.

Ah! Well then allow me to be the happy informer of the good news! The great novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe was thick in the air across this divided country and all were effected!
It was a power that had no equal because the Lord himself was at work in repentance and revival globally as was the case prior to our revolution. When your done Uncle Tom's cabin I have another book for you.
But seriously no shenanigans I just need to send you a friendly fiver. Where's your balls
