Think I’ll muddle through...

Back when I did the daily commute to work, it would be about an hour each way on a good day. Weather, road work and any accidents could easily extend that to 1.5+ hrs each way which happened at least once a week.

Generally there was only one way to go on the main roads/highways and a few alternate ways on back roads. The back roads kinda ran parallel to the main highways. I’d prefer the back roads which took you through towns along the way. On average, it’d take a little more time but would be more consistent. During the school year there would be a small window that if you missed it, you’d get stuck behind school buses.

I started using Waze or Google to see if there were any snags coming up. If so I could get off the highway and take the back way. Problem was, so would everybody else. The driving assistant or listening to the traffic reports on the radio ended up being rather worthless other than to let you know that in 10 minutes things are going to suck. They should have programmed it for this situation and have it say: “Yeah, you’re about to come to a dead stop soon and there’s nothing you can really do about no matter what way you go. Sucks to be you.”

I don’t miss the daily commute at all.

Hard for me to understand why anyone would put up with long commutes for very long if there was an alternative like moving closer to work. Some friends have spent literally years of their life driving to and from.

I wasn't gonna say anything cuz I don't wanna be a one upper, but I used to live in Santa Monica and work in burbank... for those not in Southern California, that equates to a roughly 26 mile drive that equated to a roughly 1 hour and 15 minute drive into work, and a two and a half hour drive home... as long as there were no accidents or sporting events...

Thursdays I would leave work early and drive the 188 miles from burbank to Kingsburg to see my future wife... quite often - without exaggeration - that drive would be faster than my commute to my apartment that was only 26 miles away... (there's a roughly 30 mile straight shot of 5 lane freeway south of Bakersfield with no on or off ramps... keep it under a buck and you're golden...)

When I shattered my ankle and got stuck on my parents couch for 3 months, I found the number to an apartment complex that was only a few miles of non freeway driving from the plant... signed a year lease without ever seeing the building...

In MA, the closer you get to Boston the housing prices go up exponentially and you get less home/property/privacy for the money so it comes down to a tradeoff between the two.

I'm at the point in my life where the higher salary doesn't justify the extra headache (for me). I have no problem stepping back on the take home income if it means a simpler life over what I've been doing the past 27+ years. It also made me re-evaluate my "wants" vs "needs" in my lifestyle. Learned that I was wasting a lot of money on $hit I really don't need.

Agreed, Bucky. Bought a brand new home in Temecula for about $50-70k less than a similar 25-30 year old home in San Diego and commuted 130 miles round trip for 7 years.

That home is worth a whole helluva lot more than I paid and Temecula has grown a lot and people want to live here. Houses on the market are selling in days, not weeks.

Welp... it's a damn fine day outside. Sunny and 77 degrees... think I'll grab a nice cigar and take the pup to the dog park.
