Whenever I worked on process improvement projects I'd just put my hands in my pockets and watch and ask questions. Why are you doing like that? I hated to hear "Because that's the way they told me to do it" Bzzzzt, wrong answer. If you could do it your way, how would you do it and why? You show me. You're the expert, I'm just a monkey with a piece of paper that says I'm an engineer. I'd do this in every step along the way and see how each step fed the other.
Ya gotta look at the entire system. What Sally did in step 2 impacts what George does in step 12. If Sally can do a little something different without impacting quality or functionality but it helps George at step 12, then lets make it happen. F-the procedures, I can update that as long as we can justify the change. My job is to make your job easier.
It's amazing on what you learn from asking questions. The biggest one is Why? It's the most basic question... just listen to any 2 year old.. but why? but why? but why? but why? but why? The 5 whys.
I'm sick in the head and think too much. Lean manufacturing stuff is always pinging around in my head for stupid daily stuff. If I put the spice rack right near the stove, I wouldn't have to walk an extra three steps across the kitchen to get the garlic powder.
