The university had to get permission from the Wisconsin Historical Society to remove the boulder, as it sat within the area of a Native American burial mound, according to the university. The rock was not sitting on top of a burial site. Precautions such as load barring mats and platforms were used to protect the ground around the rock. It was moved to another site on school property so it can continue to be used for research and teaching purposes.

I hope they can make this a teaching moment and open up lines of communication with the rock so it can understand how it’s actions have caused harm. Only then can the rock move forward and create an inclusive environment.
