Why do people get offended when someone is smarter than them?

People don't get mad and go into denial if someone is stronger than them.

People don't get mad and go into denial if someone is taller than them.

People don't get mad and go into denial if someone is more athletic than them.

Why do people get mad and go into denial if someone is smarter than them?

I've seen it my whole life, the blank looks... the bewilderment... the empty gazes, yet if anyone insinuates that someone else is smarter, they get offended... like raging mad at insinuating that someone might be smarter them.

I know I'm probably not going to get anything worthwhile out of this, but I'll ask anyway...

But you didn't really answer my question though... why do people get so offended at the mere insinuation that someone might be smarter than them? Seriously, they tend to go into a defensive rage mode.
