Wiffle balls and Nerf weren't really used by us.

If the girls on our block wanted to play something we played hide and seek.

We did the same and called it "No Rules"

Used to play full contact basketball on an asphalt court in junior high. Couldn't swing or kick, but other than that, no rules

We always had to play wiffle-ball in the street. Skinny yellow plastic bat and a large white ball with holes.
- We always considered a bank shot off the neighbor's car or garage an in-field shot.
- 3 swing and misses to hit the ball. No swing doesn't count as a ball.
- Bean the runner with the ball or tag.


We called that "stick ball".

We used to call that jungle ball (kids were awful with the names of games).

Never was good at basketball. We had a hoop and backboard mounted on the roof in front of the garage. The hoop was about the standard 10 ft from the ground. This too was a standard out door activity. Rules: no blood, no foul.

However, couple of the older kids on the block stood about 6' 18". Their names are Lars and his brother Glen Gregerson.. stereotypical Nordic giants... ain't no way you're gonna get close to the hoop with them playing. My brother was a bit faster and more agile so he could get underneath.

Again, played until sundown and into the night until the parents called us in. Problem with playing basketball in the driveway and having with the hoop mounted on the garage was after sundown, the spot lights that lit up the drive way were in your eyes. So it was a corundum... either play in the dark with night vision or play with lights to lite up the "court" and shoot blinded.

Street hockey or street baseball... I don't think I'm in the minority with the universal call of "CAR!" and "GAME ON!"

2 ways to play wiffle ball.
First, very similar to Bucky's rules.

But in college everyone played without base runners.
Hits caught without bobbling it, even grounders cleanly fielded, were outs.
Infield hits were singles.
Past the infield were doubles.
And homers were some odd set point depending on the "field" played.

Advantage: play with fewer players.
Or cycle people in during the game.
Or have quick games so the next 3 guys could play.
Plus easy to work in beers.


My favorite way was using a chair as the catcher. Any pitch that landed on the seat or hit the back was a strike.
You can get some pretty creative curves and eephus balls in there.
