Best day of 2025 today.

Heard and then saw my first Red Winged Blackbird.

Glorious.

Still 75f at 9pm.

Just got back from my son's pinewood derby thing.

Won first in show, lost racing. He wanted to do it all himself, so I call it a win. I could've helped make it faster but he wanted to do it all. The only things I did were 4 cuts on the table saw and melting/pouring the lead.

Yes.
Generally they go as far "north" as Kentucky and Southern Illinois. Most winter in the old confederacy.

They leave us bu August. Gets too hot for them.

Their songs are my favorite, readily available sound. Usuallly they show here in early April. The first one(s) arrived with the warm front fron the south.

Heading down in July!

Not sure. We started fostering greyhounds because it was a nice way to give back to the community (and we could have dogs without having to pay the miscellaneous costs associated with that). Odds are that we’ll stop fostering for a bit because my wife and I want to start having kids. Maybe once the kiddos are older, we’ll start fostering again or get a grey of our own. We have an order of operations here: Finish PhD > have kid(s) > get job > buy house with big yard > get a grey. That’s the plan, at least.

We never wanted a kid. We adopted our first, then second. Unsure if it just correlation or causation. We decided on a kid.

Greyhounds are a gateway heartbeat drug. Or at least it was for us.

Good for you folks.

3 AM while sleeping was woken up to "chirp... chirp.." Thought I was dreaming..so just rolled over but the "chirp" didn't stop.

Franking smoke alarm battery was running out of juice. 3:14 AM got on a step stool to get it down. Kinda sucked. Yes, 3:14 AM sounds rather specific but I vividly remember it.

Memo to the smoke alarm.. chirp at me at when I'm awake not when I'm sleeping. Stupid smoke alarm.

We have been having the a similar problem. A very intermittent chirp, maybe once an hour, from one of our alarms that my wife can hear but I can't.

I changed one in the hallway but two more are way up at about 15 feet and it might be one of them although new ones were installed only about a year ago. There are also batteries in the thermostat and it showed they were low, so I changed those out this morning. Waiting to hear iffn the chirping has stopped yet. 🀦
