Zappa and Alice Cooper are groups that my dad used to listen to. My first concert was in '71. Alice Cooper in his heyday! It gave me nightmares for years. I was 7 years old!

Anyway, As adults we must accept that our kids and their friends will listen to music that we don't like, find morally offensive, and grating to the senses. The way to handle this, IMHO, is:
1. Never allow your money to be spent on this, IMO, garbage.
2. If your kids insist, make them earn the money they spend on it themselves.
3. Make them listen to it with you, yeah suffer through it, at a low enough volume that you can hear the words.
4. Between songs, stop the cd, have them explain to you, what the words mean to them, then tell them what they mean to you. You might open their eyes, or they in turn yours, words don't mean the same thing with modern slang exp. Sick = cool, go figure.
5. Don't stop with one cd go through all your kids music with them. Yes it will take alot of time, it does take time to be a good parent, and not just another sperm / egg donor. As for the movie 8-miles, if the kids "HAVE TO SEE IT", go with them. If they don't want you to go, then don't let them go.

P.S. DrMaddvibe, My first concert was the Monterey Pop Festival 1968, I spent alot of the time with my ears covered, in a backpack on my sisters back, I was 4 at the time.

I guess that's why I'm so against what MM is and stands for. While I'm no puritan, I do have a sense of decency. If you wallow with pigs, you're going to get muddy. Music as a medium strikes a harmonic balance to our lives. It enriches ones soul. It has the power to transcend. It moves people. We use it as a backdrop to our daily endeavors. It's on in the car, it's on speakers at work, it's scored for TV and film, and then there's worship and concerts. It's not a sacred act, but I think that any artist owes it to their form to respect what came before them and realize their day in the sun is short lived. A wise person would take the opportunity to share something that they would let their own children and grandchildren listen to. After all, most people will judge them by what they do and how they act. With very few artists ever getting the chance to sign a record deal or perform live to get their "message" out, and when it's all said and done it's so foul that every other word is bleeped out isn't exactly a contribution to society. Especially in this day and age, The Rolling Stones are STILL touring! What does THAT say about how sorry the "new" acts are? I'm not ripping on the Stones, I'm ripping on the talent pool out there and the people that sign these "artists".

I listen to everything except hard-core country and hard-core rap. It's not an age thing or a volume thing. It's a DECENT thing. It's a moral thing. It's a respectful thing! That's the point that I stand on with MM and his ilk. When you can't shock people anymore then pull the plug. Ask Marilyn Manson! He's ran the gamut. The only thing he has left to do is pull the contact lens out, let the dye come off, get a little sun on his face and get real. He can't shock anyone anymore with his act! Radio won't play 9/10 of his music on the air, and the same is true for MM!

My dad still listen to Alice Cooper,Uriah Heap, Canned Heat, Flying Burrito Bros, and yes...the late Frank Zappa. My kids listen to just about anything, from Brittney to Tim McGraw. I don't restrict them, they already KNOW better than to listen to trash. I like to think the respect themselves and others more than some do.

My 13 year old daughter thinks he is cute. She gets to listen to his crap with her friends and I don't bother to mess with her over it. She just doesn't get to own any CD's or play his stuff in the house.

I listened to Black Sabbath and AC/DC (and a gazillion other "satanic" groups) as a kid too. Mom and Dad wouldn't let me play it in front of them either and I wouldn't think of it. It didn't effect my life choices, I don't worship Satan and I didn't end up shooting up in the bathroom. It wasn't because of the music. It was because of my upbringing.

If she enjoys Eminem away from the house, then so she does. She still likes Tim McGraw and Faith Hill too. She will grow up and decide what she will stick with, or not. She won't see Eight Mile with my or her Mom's permission but I am sure she will see it some day.
She is well aware of our opinion and doesn't make it an issue.

My opinion...Eminem is a punk. So are a lot of the rappers out there too. Some of their stuff is funny. Some is actually not too bad. But I will choose not to help line their wallets with my money.

(PS wife and I got 6th row seats to Styx,REO Speedwagon and Journey....now that is music!)
