What is it with these yahoos (pardon the expression) who bid on lots hours, even days before they close?? I'm not against Cbid making a profit, but most of them drop off before they close anyway, and all it does is drive the price up for the rest of us.

Why ?? Do you wait till last minute and then place the bid?? Like to see people getting knocked out???

If I see something I want, I place the bid... WHENEVER... 2 min after opening... 2 min before closing...

If you get in early and set your max bid for what you are willing to pay, if it gets close at the end, you have seniority and others that bid after you get bumped first...

And I don't know what you mean by driving up the price?? Do you think it stays at $1 until YOU are READY to bid???

Sorry to say this but that has got to be one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard. I look at the stuff opening everyday and if I want something, I bid my max when the auction opens. That way I have senority up to my max. This stategy has worked great for me so far.

Why does a poker player open with a nothing hand? The principle is the same. If a bidder uses the autobid function, the only way to find out the max limit of his bid is to place a bid of your own. (ie "calling" his bid). That can discourage hit and run bids. Second, most bidders on this board understand the fair market price of most commonly available items and/or compare what CI lists five packs at, and would likely bid the item to an average price anyway. In other words, the reason you can't get the Ashton Sampler for $20 is not because of the early bidders. It's because bidders know that it retails (mail order) for $75, and adjust the bids up or down accordingly. However, there's nothing wrong with throwing a $20 bid at it just in case everyone else goes fishin' that weekend.

I must agree with HarleyDave (not to be mean or too insulting to CigarRick) but that was a pretty dumb statement. Most of my best deals I have gotten on Cbid are from early bids.

Rick, you should read what autobid is all about and understand the concept of it. The early bird gets the Bucs!

1st bidder get's priority and will often pay less than other winners in a multiple item lot upon closing.

Boy, lots of early bidders here. I thought that was just my strategy. Bid as lots open, figure out what you'll pay up to and accept the consequenses. I guess if you just got to have a certain lot at any price then you might revise to a late bidding strategy. However, very few things here merit that consideration from me. I'm also noticing that the real hot items sometimes get bid up almost to Cigars International mail order prices or other sources.

I'm with Low and everyone else on this one. I always bid early when a lot opens. It just makes more sense to me. Especialy when there are multiple lots.

Agree with the majority...get in early and put up your max...if you win...oh yeah...if you dont...oh well, you have a bench-mark for the next time that auction type comes up...

Yep. Bid early for the best price and seniority. Bid late if You have to have it and price is secondary. I've gotten some terrific deals on early bids during an off week when other bidders are laying low.
