Jobless claims have been rising this year.

"In an ongoing sign of the weak economy, the number of Americans getting unemployment benefits hit the highest level in more than 20 years during the last week of May."

A couple of qstns,

1. What is the number of Americans "employed" now vs. 20 years ago? Are their more Americans employed as well as more unemployed? Implying that "there are more Americans?"

2. On-going sign of the weak economy... I believe all indications were that the recession began in the Clinton presidency and these things neither occur in a flash or disappear in a flash. It's like a large ship trying to turn. The economists I listen to on Sunday morning and read in the financial journals all say that the leading economic indicators are all positive? How can you have such an antithetical view of current trends?

i.e., “The Wall Street Journal reports that, between Oct. 9, 2002, and May 9, 2003 (Oct. 9 being the market's low), the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 18.1 percent. If that pace continues, the Dow will be up 31 percent for that 12-month period.”

That’s a good thing, right? Or are you hoping that things go down hill, so that Bush will be blamed? I do believe we’re struggling, but I also believe (like it or not) that President Bush’s stimulus (read tax cuts! That’s right tax cuts stimulate the economy) are helping and not hurting. Additionally, virtually everyone polled trusts the republicans more with national security than the democrats.

I’m afraid you’re in for another 4 years of dubbya 🙂

I hate to break apart this love fest, but I'd like to respond to the original post.

I know the economy is tight. But I also know that it's damn near impossible to find somebody that wants to WORK.
Unemployment numbers mean NOTHING when so many of the umemployed are simply unwilling to be employed.

Don't get me wrong. I realize that MANY folks are without work through no fault of their own, and those people are truly looking for jobs and deserve government assistance to keep them going.

But a frighteningly large percentage are simply dragging their feet until such time the government stops their checks.

Yet these slobs count towards that lofty unemployement tally.

heh, Rick, welcome aboard! Gater, I addressed the thread, I thought I did so well, with facts, and some speculation. However, WRT your last post, I don't agree completely. Yes, if someone wants to work, they probably could, however, certain fields have been hit extremely hard. i.e., my field, networking. There are a plethora of highly skilled networking professionals who have been pushed in to unemployment as a result of two things, 1 a decline in the sector, and 2, a glut of people trying to get in to the field. True, they could get jobs carrying bricks, or making subs, however, undeniably, some fields have been impacted by the decline in the economy. I'm hopeful that it continues to improve so that all who seek work can find it.

Are you willing to flip burgers, after 2+ years of culinary school? Are you willing to "Live Hang Chickens, after earning your masters degree in marketing? How about running a CNC machine after 20+ years of tool and die work???

I did state that many folks are without employment due to circumstance beyond their control.
That does not paint the whole picture, however.

It used to be that when unemployment figures rose, it was easier to find honest, hard working folks who wanted to make a buck even if only temporarily.

An economic downturn with corresponding jobless rates used to "right the ship". Look at the '80s when secretaries at computer giants (Digital) used to have secretaries of their own. And they all made $60K.
What happened when the bottom fell out of that industry? Those overpaid receptionists felt jilted when they earned a "measley" $25K, not realizing that was their true financial worth to begin with.

When entire industries take a hit, as yours has, people adjust. It would be foolish to wait until your exact job title and pay scale became available before you started working again, wouldn't it? Instead, the smart workers alter their job description, their payscale, or both.

When Henry Ford introduced an affordable automobile, the blacksmiths didn't look to Uncle Sam to support them.

This is in NO way pointed at you, Robby. Quite the contrary. Intelligent people make intelligent decisions.

I have an engineering degree and I sweep floors.

I also run production equipment and find new business contacts, as well as develop products for my customers.

I wish the economy were stronger so it would be easier to get our business going to the point where I no longer had to be on the production floor.
But until such time, I will do what needs to be done in order to survive. To keep the business going and to put food on my table.
Nobody said life would go as planned.

Work hard. Play harder.
It's all worth it.
