Okay, I might sound like an idiot, but I have always cut a cigar, but I just got a keychain Puncher from a buddy. I have no clue what to do with it! I can guess that I insert the sharp hallowed out end of the puncher into the head of the cigar, but then what? Do I take out a chunk of the cigar, if so, how much? Or do I just make a circular ring, and smoke out of that.

Come to the light. All is good with the punch. One of my favorite ways to cut.
First things first. BE CAREFUL. The cigar is delicate.
Hold the cigar firmly but gently. Take the hollowed, sharp end of the punch and CAREFULLY and slowly push and twist the punch into the end of the cigar. Once it has reached the "base" of the punch, remove it and a small, circular piece of the cap will come out with it. You now have a perfectly round hole from which you can draw in the lovely flavor of your gar.

If you've ever cut hot bread with a knife, you've got a good idea how to handle this ... just as you could not shove a knife into the hot bread without squishing it, you cannot just shove the punch into the cigar ... a gentle back and forth twist with slight pressure until, as described above, the punch has cut all the way into the cigar ... and VOILA ... you're ready to light 'em up ...

IMNSHO Throw the punch away, and go back to your cutter. Punches work fine, If you want to taste the black tarry substance that forms around the hole that you punch.

Agree with Homebrew

I don't agree with Homebrew. I use a punch for almost every cigar I smoke and have never gotten even a taste of tar. If I don't punch I, V-cut. Which probably removes no more surface area than the punch. Like almost every other facet of cigar smoking you should try it for yourself. As it's been said, your mileage may vary.

After trying a large shell casing cutter from RICKAMAVEN, I'm not so sure I need to cut all of the time. I think there's a time and a place. Some cigars can be punched and maybe some can't. Of course torps can't. Anyway, I experienced no tar all the way to the nub after I punched a Padron 3000 nat.
