Evening all,

I know this topic has been discussed but here's the problem. I know the general rule is to remove cigars from their glass tubes and put them in the humi. Well I won some Gurka Salutes on cbid. These cigars appear to be in a speacial tube sealed with wax. 1st it seems a shame to remove it as it is part of the presentation of the cigar not to mention trade, resale, collection value. And second they are saturated with cognac. So even if I did take them out of the tubes I couldn't put them in my humi anyway.
If anyone has gotten any of the Gurkha tubed cigars please let me know what have you done and how did it work out?

I just got some Acid 1400 cc and I would never consider taking them out of the tube and putting them into my humidor "naked", although all my other cigars are naked in there. I think that it would really amagamate with all the other flavors too much...

I don't agree that it is common practice to take the cigar out of the tube. Where did you get that idea?

The tube protects the cigar against rapid changes in humidity and makes it crush proof in your pocket or briefcase. In the case of a flavored cigar it keeps the aromatic agents inside to maintain potency and protect the surrounding cigars.

You paid extra for the tube. Why would you take it out?

Personally I would only take them out if Slim sais it was a good idea:-)

tandem401 --- you are fooing yourself if you think that the tube regualates the humidity level.

Almost everyone of the cigars I've had that came in tubes have been on the dry side ... and it's to the benefit of the cigar to let it humidify out of the tube ...

... that is, with the exception of the 'liquor flavored' cigars. They usually have a wax seal ... and for a reason, and that is to keep the liquor essence from evaporating.

Most (if not all the rest) do not have a wax seal ... and they are not sealed nearly as well.

Save the tubes ... and put them back in when you hit the road!

I'm still working on the issue of storing/aging cigars in a properly maintained, humidified environment....

You didn't quite read my post. The tube doesn't regulate anything it just makes the changes occur more slowly. A cigar in a tube will dry out completely if it's stored incorrectly, excepting some which are hermetically sealed as with wax. I don't doubt that you've had that problem. It has happened to me. If I had a whole batch that needed some attention to humidity I suppose I would look at each one and take them out to speed the process but on the whole the tube is part of the esthetics of the matter which I prefer to use as the manufacturer intended.

I also reuse the tubes for travel. That's a great idea which I employ often.
