I've read about the coolerdors, the tupperdors and the mason jar-a-dors. I even made a popcorn-can-a-dor early in my cigar smoking adventure. I've checked the posts by searching for "refrigerator" and found nothing about this subject. So, I'll ask, has anyone used an old dorm size refrigerator (or even a full size model) as a humidor? They're cheap, they seal well, they're plentiful and big enough to hold a good supply of cigars, expecially a full size one.

When I was doing coolerdor research, I came across a couple posts somewhere about how the seal was not good enough and the posters had to finally give up. But I wasn't really researching that subject...

From what Iunderstand and plan on doing myself in the same manner with a mini fridge is that as long as the fridge is in good condition and the seal is intact then you will have a great humi. What I plan on doing is gutting it and sealing the newly formed holes up to make it even more sealed. Line it with cedar if you prefer and add a humidifier. Sounds good and as soon as I find a broken one that I can mess with I plan on doing it myself. Cant get the courage to buy a new one only to turn it into something else than what it was intended for. Good luck and let us know of anything you do that would benifit us.

There's a used fridge place around the corner from me. They get truckloads of 'em and only some of them are worth rebuilding. Look around for a joint like that in your neck o' the woods.

I also wouldn't worry TOO much about the seal. A LITTLE air won't hurt as long as you have a good sized humidifier with 50/50 or Climmax. Then you wouldn't have to open it regularly to air it out (like you won't be checking in on your babies anyway). If it IS sealed though, you must air it out once in a while, or your humidor will fill with the smell of ammonia.

I think it's a great idea though as a fridge will not be at risk of temp changes. When my addition is complete, I may just do something like it myself if I don't do a closet walk-in.

Yes I am in the middle of a similar project. A full sized fridge, spanish cedar, and Large humidifier, oasistype, actually 2 of them. Since I live in the south, I am rigging a household thermostat, which will engage the compressor, if the temp, gets above 70 degrees. My engineer friend, says it will work. I am hoping he is right.
Today I am P.C. Building, instead. My P.C. got fried by lightning yesterday, so I am having to build a new one. Hope to have it up, by tonight. I don't like using someone elses PC, like I am doing today.

That's a GREAT idea! The trick will be getting the thermostat to work correctly. It would be nice to rig the guts from something like that in to one of those big pretty stand up wooden cabinets and hide it well.

Did anyone come up with anything that worked? I am also looking to convert a large fridge into a humidor.

Nah it never worked, but one guy accidentally left a head of iceberg lettuce in his fridge and that held humidity at a perfect 65rh. He would just move the head of lettuce around to other parts of the fridge when he got out a cigar.

I have a wineador set. I picked up the wine fridge for 80 bucks and it works great. Also it has a glass front so you can see in it. Being in my basement it stays 68.8 constant temp and 69% humidity. I have a large hydra electronic humidifier in it. I love it
