Hi all,

I am running out of room in my 3 humi's and I have a treasure chest that isnt being used, do you think from the pic below that it could become a new humidor?, it would be big enough for a lot of smokes, thanks ahead for any help,

Chris,

Ive noticed everytime I have looked at one I cant get past the smell in them and would not want to put my smokes through that even after installing Spanish Cedar. Just my thoughts.

If you're speaking of the smell in the coolers... that is easily corrected. You wash it thoroughly with dish soap and water and then let it dry (open) in the sunlight. The smell disappears. I then break up all my old boxes and line the inside with the Spanish Cedar from the boxes. This works unbelievably well. I buy a cheap humidity gauge from Cbid (usually less $5) and go to my local florist and buy a block of oasis foam. Soak this in a solution of 50/50 distilled water and propylene glycol and you are ready to go.

There is no smell and you are left with boundless room for cigars. I currently have two colleradors and 5 humdiors in use. There is no difference in taste from the sticks stored in the cooleradors versus the ones in the standard humidors.

Just my two bits....

Cheers,

Grond

I'd be a little cautious about that one ...

My suggestion for an inexpensive temporary solution:
Go to WalMart ... buy a Sterlite storage tub ( the 73 qt unit is less than $4), a tupperware dish big enough to put two or three sandwiches in, a block of wet florist foam and a gallon of distilled water ... total investment including tax will be $7 or $8 ...

cut the wet florist foam to fit into and fill the tupperware dish, soak it with the distilled water, put that into the Sterilite tub and add cigars ... it'll work. An ideal long-term solution it isn't, but a very functional short-term and inexpensive solution it is ...

That'll give you time to source a more ideal unit that you can line with spanish cedar, make trays or bins for, etc ...

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would put a couple of coats of polyurethane in as a vapor barrier first. The local woodworker chain store carries big sheets of spanish cedar, and it's not very expensive.

If Your Careful you can remove the chip board from the shell and then reinstall Spanish Cedar after you have cleaned the shell and I would (Just as a precaution) use some odor sealer on it. You can get the odor sealer at your local hardware store...Just a thought TinMan

if you use the polyurethane to seal it... and do decide to use this Item to store your Cigars... then use the Water Based Poly... it's a bit more expensive but it will not produce an odor that the oil based Poly puts off... and like others have said line it also with Spanish Ceder.. but then if you glue that in... there's the Odor off the glue to worry about...

Elmers is semi-odorless and odorless when dry...

but SteveS has the better Idea IMO... lot less Cash...
more money for Cigars LoL...

Don't forget lining the trunk with one inch foam insulation before you install the spanish cedar. This will help control the temp as well as the humidity.

I would lov to find out that "retail chain" store that sells spanish cedar sheets at a low cost. I haven't seen that yet.

From my own experience I can say this: The Spanish Cedar might very well suck up any resin or glue or moisture or odor from the flake board. Even through polyurethane! Line the trunk with some non-porous material. Some cheap tin sheeting. Aluminum foil might even work. Then line it with 1/4" Spanish Cedar. Check it every day. after a number of months, if all you smell is cedar and tobacco, you are home free! If you smell ANYTHING else, get your smokes out of there!
