My emergency medical service here in Cleveland has about 200 field personnel. We run two shift keys: A & B. Each shift works 12 hours. So, really we have four shifts-A 0700-1900/1900-0700, and B 0700-1900/1900-0700. Two people per squad x 21 squads. That's 42 per shift. Now subtract injuries, vacations, sick calls, recert. class removals, and we end up running short most of the time. The shortages made up with overtime. Plus, extra staffing requirements since 9/11, and now we are really hurting. We lost about five people to active duty. This puts a big strain on our division.
Luckily, so far, the city is holding their jobs for them. It really sucks for these folks, because now they are making less pay than they did prior to being activated.
They have enough going on in their lives being away from family who can't always make ends meet due to the pay cut. Now, they may lose their job and not even know it before it's too late? This sucks.

This country was formed by citizen soldiers. It seems that some people have forgotten that.

The only reason these people are in business earning a profit is because of the personnel sacrifices our military men and women are making over there, instead of having all the terrorism here.
Thank God that we aren't like Israel where you can't even go to the mall without worrying about a suicide bomber taking you out.
Their medics also carry weapons for self-defense. Imagine shooting a terrorist before he blows up a bomb, then saving his life. Ironic, isn't it?

There is a difference between regular military and the National Guard. For the former the military is their carrier and their JOB. Members of National Guard have to have another JOB and a carrier to live on. When they are deployed they leave their families and homes like anyone else, but the also leave behind their livelihood and their carriers. They also leave behind a lot of business that may be crippled until the citizen solider returns. Not to mention leaving their home State without the emergency services the National Guard provides.

Don’t tell me they volunteered and should stop complaining. They chose to serve their country, many of them after serving in the regular service. The thanks they get include; second class equipment and second-class treatment. Now to add insult to injury, National Guard troops in Iraq are being extended to 365 days in Iraq, longer than regular troops, and they have been given so many different exit dates no one really know when they will get home. The extension is a bitter pill when they have completed every mission they were assigned and more.

I say bring back the draft and require if not military some sort of National Service for everyone, men and women.

IMHO, Knowing their kids might be involved would sober up some of the armchair generals so willing to commit our military and say well they the “Volunteered” so we too bad. I say KMA, send your kid an see if it’s such a great idea.

Sorry for the rant, but I get fired up on this issue.

Gene... I also get fired up on the Issue... Rumsfield has said to the Armchair Generals and has asked Congress to realign the Guard and Reserve to fit the events of today... but yet in the Artical I posted above.... this hasn't happened yet... and probably wont for a long time... why? because its to difficult.. so in the mean time... these Weekend Worriers suffer the end result...unlike their Active Duty counterparts who can Take Leave to go home and see family ... PCS off to School while their serving in the region... they have to stick it out till their completion date and then come home... and then find out the Job that was suppose to be waiting for them Canned them and they fall into Hardship to support their families!!!!
Ohh and I didn't mention... if these members were to get hurt or come down with a Disqualifying desease that renders them Non Deployable in the Future... their Gone.. they do not get the Benefits and entitlements of their Counterparts on Active Duty get... you know...extended Healthcare for themselves and their Familys... it costs them out of Pocket to take care of the Ailments that rendered them non Militarly Fit for Duty!!!!
when it's all said and done.. then they fall into the VA program.. only for that Specific Ailment and nothing more is covered... then they are judged by how bad the ailment is... 10%-100% disabled... then that is when they get the scheduled appointment to one of the perticipating Hospitals or VA centers....Congress Permitting that is.. After the Budget is passed and there might be enough funding for this person to see a Military Doctor/Hospital....
meantime try the food banks to feed your family!!!!
Oh and if they forclose on your house and Property... we just want to say Thank You for your serving your Country in its time of need... It's Time America Got rid of the "Yes Men" in Washington!!!!!!! and lets get back to the Real America!!!!!!
