actually, a rim is what the tire actually sits on. Many plain rims are ugly, so people pu on hubcaps to make it look like they have rims

dunno the technical niceties on this but ... I was told that the "rim" is the same as the "wheel" that the tire is mounted on ... and that a "wheel cover" is something like the item pictured here that covers all of the wheel while a hubcap is one of the little personal pizza sized chromies that used to cover only the center of the wheel ... and come to think of it, I've not seen one of them in years ...

in the old days, when i was young, when a traveling salesman or group of actors came into a village, the nut that held the wheel on the cart was held by the sheriff. they had to pay all the expenses they had charged before they could get the nut back and leave the village. hence (a term from ye olde days)
"making your nut", means, earning enough to pay all your bills.

In the car wash trade, the quickest way to tell if the car had been washed well was to check out the rims, where brake dust and road grime would accumulate. When a car was properly serviced, it was said to have gotten a "rim job". As in, "Hey, Smith, did you give that Ranger a rim job?"
