Democrats in Washington, however, were muted in their reaction.

Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota congratulated the Army and intelligence analysts for the successful operation. But his statement did not mention Bush or the White House.

Several Democratic presidential candidates likewise ignored the president in issuing statements hailing Saddam's capture.

“Let's also be clear: Our problems in Iraq have not been caused by one man, and this is a moment when the administration can and must launch a major effort to gain international support and win the peace,” Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts said. “We need to share the burden, bring in other countries, and make it clear to the world that Iraq belongs to the Iraqi people."

Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, meanwhile, used his statement to attack the perceived front-runner for the nomination, former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont.

While calling it “a day of glory for the American military,” Lieberman said the news “makes clear the choice the Democrats face next year.”

“If Howard Dean had his way, Saddam Hussein would still be in power today, not in prison, and the world would be a more dangerous place,” he said.

They have made it clear that Iraq Belongs to the Iraqi people.. and do so every day... setting up an Iraqi Governement and moving forward with the Efforts dispite the obstructions they've run across....

Now to allow the Iraqi People to Try Saddam in their Fashon of Justice... Public trial and let the people have him... General Order #1 for our Military was/is we cannot watch or be part of the Arab Nations Public Trials and Exacusions I think CNN and FOX should cover this Live for the World to see.. if we did Judgements in this country like they do in theirs.. there would be a hell of allot less Crimes!!!!!!

is said in the same breath as

"setting up an Iraqi government."

You can't claim to give the country back to the people when you appoint its government, system of governance, and economic policy.

Contradiction. Plain and simple. At least be a man and say "we are molding Iraq in our image, whether they like it or not." That'd be the truth.

That said, conservatives are self-serving and taking political advantage when talking about this capture. Capturing Hussein was hardly the reason we went into Iraq, and it doesn't justify the tens (soon hundreds) of billions of dollars poured into the project.

So, when you say 'this day,' realize that that is a politically loaded isolation of the day from all others. Some of us aren't so naive and won't fall for this game.

I can't wait to see how you react when the oppressed people of Iraq wake up today and realize that Saddam really isn't coming back to haunt them. They'll start ratting out the locations to WOMD,mass graves and weapons caches faster than you can say "liberal"!

In their embattled state, Iraq would be immediatly taken over by another millitant dictator/s.

Yes, I for one would like to see a form of Democracy there. One that serves all the people of Iraq. Having several different peoples and religions in the country complicates a rule-yourself-now capability.

It is likely that if left to fend for themselves in this stage, only one faction would take control and slaughter the others, you know, kinda' like Saddam did.

Iraq hasn't had any experience in setting up, running, or even participating in government for 35 years. It might be nice if someone who has was to keep an eye on things and make sure some other nutcase doesn't get control of things.

In my opinion, this just shows one (or both) of two things. One, jdrabinski will never admit anything good came from the war, or two, he is very naïve in the ways of the world and feels just anyone can setup a government.

Using jdrabinski’s logic, he’d have no concerns about flying in a 747 with someone who’s never had flight lessons. I mean, the FAA are just molding their pilots in their own image whether they like it or not.

But what can you expect from someone who believes it’s okay to have a dictator in power that’s reportedly killed over a million people? What can you expect from someone who believes it’s okay NAMBLA has a website that promotes and teaches how to sexually molest young boys? AN INTERESTING QUESTION:
There are two men, both extremely wealthy. One develops relatively cheap software and gives billions of dollars to charity. The other sponsors terrorism. That being the case, why was it that the Clinton Administration spent more money chasing down Bill Gates over the past eight years than Osama bin Laden?

It is a strange turn of events. Hillary gets $8 Million for her forthcoming memoir. Bill gets about $12 Million for his memoir yet to be written. This from two people who have spent the past 8 years being unable to recall anything about past events while under oath!
