Could anyone tell me, or give me a rough idea, what is the percentage of tax paid in the US on tobacco.
In the Uk, taxes are by far the bulk of the purchase price of a cigar. To give you an idea, and I know this is based on Cuban cigars, but a box of R&J Exhibicion No3's cost around £280...the same box in Spain costs around £80...A packet of 20 average cigarettes costs around £4.00 and the same one in Spain(even though they are manufactured in the UK) cost around £1.30p.
the government here are using tobacco taxes to pay for about 5-10% of public services!...the problem is, that because peaople are used to paying through the roof for tobacco over here, this or any future government will just be able to carry on hitting the person that genuinely likes a smoke...Are your taxes determined on a state by state basis?...All it seems to be doing here is creating an underworld of tobacco smuggling. Sorry if you think this post should be on the political board...but I just wondered where the USA stood on this matter, and how much your government were hitting peiople that not only consider smoking quality cigars a pleasure, but also consider it a bit of a hobby?

In California, we pay a 67% tobacco tax, and then a 8% sales tax ... on top of the overhead at the 'brick and mortar' ... oh yeah, and of course the dealer markup. Hum ... did I leave anything out ...

Yes...It is a state by state tax and varies with each state...Hey Jack...What is Illinois?...15% if I'm not mistaken?...AJ, I don't think this should be on the Political Board...Make perfect sense for it to be on the Cigar Board

State and county taxes in Illinois add up to about 22-24% total. State tax alone is about 15%. I guess we don't have it that bad when compared to other places.

I think the federal government also adds a tax as well. Am I wrong on this point??

I think across the board all states are being heavily taxed and it will continue. Seems to be politically correct now. I don't know why your taxes are so steep there. Maybe that is why over 200 yrs. ago we declared independence.......just kidding! It is everywhere that consumers are bearing the brunt, not just in the UK.

The Boston "Tea Party" was over a 2% tax, how times are a changing, no ?

BTW New Jersey has a 48% Tabbcy tax, plus 6% sales tax on top of that. The 48% tax came to being about 4 years ago (used to be 24), they doubled it for Charity Hospital care... Social programs.....
