we're looking for a new provider. any suggestions? looking for a landline service (i.e., not wireless) for US calls only.

Verizon cell phone. Unlimited long distance. Unlimited weekend and evenings.

I haven't used a long distance service for 2 years. Wife calls Missouri 3-4 times a week on the cell. Haven't seen a $100 phone bill in forever.

I realize I suggested a wireless service even though you weren't looking for that. Regardless, I have tried Sprint, MCI, ATT, SBC. All of them are eventually expensive. Many of them have 'special offers" which , you soon find out, do not apply to your particular caller profile. The least amount of problems I have had was with ATT. But regardless, I have gone wireless. I cannot see why it would make a difference unless its for an office.

i appreciate it, guys. the reason for no wireless is twofold -- 1) we need a landline for her computer (IF it ever works again *sigh*) and 2) we can't afford both a landline and a cell. i've GOT a good cell phone, but it doesn't have a service plan (last one i had was $88/mo with sprint).

we also won't really do more than about $15/month in long distance.

we DID have an alternative to the Big Co's with a hella lotta free time leftover from my last job (i worked from home; the co. set it up so i had butt loads of free time). but the free time's over now and we don't want to stay and pay their higher rates (like 25¢ per min). 😛

i agree with the big company "deals" -- they snag you with 'em and then the "deal" expires sooner or later. so i'm just looking for a reasonable LD service for a landline phone only.

I had to put the G/F on this a while back, because she was just killing us on long distance. 1 cent per minute and maybe 25 cents per week service charge. $10 card lasts her about 4-6 weeks.It's a bit more hassle but you just program the access # into speed dial. They've been pretty reliable as well,so much so I've been sending a card(Pin #) every 4-6 weeks to my mom in AZ so she can call whoever she wants in the family and not have to worry about it.

I just switched to BellSouth. They have unlimited long distance for about $20 a month. I combined my DSL, local service, long distance, & cellular (Cingular) and now have only one bill.

Another option I'd highly recommend is Primus. They're a reseller that I found online and their rate is 4.9 c.p.m. 24/7 and they bill in 6 second increments. You can probably find them with a Google search.

The only reason I switched was the one bill option and BellSouth discounts every service you add to their package plan.

$10 gets you about 250 minutes with the 3.9cent rate
$10 gets you about 345 ninutes with the 2.9 cent rate

they also have dialup net access...but i haven't tried it

Billy, callingcardplus, Nations choice gets you 900 minutes the first month on a $10 card even with the .25/per week maintinence fee.No connection fee.The card isn't charged anything until the first use and is then good for up to three months.

i've been feeling too ungood today to do research on big co's, but looks like we may go with bell south's unlimited but also get one of those calling cards for calls made outside our home. that's a great deal, and i used to LIVE on calling cards like those when i lived in boston. good schtuff!

I use the calling card too. I've got a couple of them...One I bought from 7-11, I think that it's like 1.5 cents per minute or something stupid like that and the other I bought a Sam's Club.

I'm happy with them, and since I switched 3 years ago...those pesky calls stopped!

DMV: how good was the one you got at sam's club? we're members there, so that's an option.

just talked to the wife, and she's okay with calling cards (as am i). but she said she thought sprint's was the best at 3 cents/minute and no fees. i want to check out the others mentioned, though.

I like it. I put the 800 # that you have to dial on a speed dial setting so that it's not that big a deal. Buying additional minutes is as easy as typing in a credit card #.

Definately calling cards, the way to go. I have been using one card, for several years now. I have a toll block, on my phone, and use a calling card. Shop around for the card, and buy one that doesn't charge a connection fee. It really saves the $$$$.

We use the att card from Sams, it works great but I am going to look into callingcardplus, 1 cent sure sounds good to me 🙂
