I wonder if any of you fine folks could suggest a good type or brand of Port wine for beginners?

I have heard that some types are very good with cigars, and more importantly, my wife is interested in buying some. With two young kids at home, I have to take any chance that I get to let the wife get me drunk and take advantage of me!

Neither one of us is very experienced with wine (I am a homebrew man) so something on the easy-to-drink side would be fine. And no, Thunderbird is not Port...

All Australian tawnies are good and cheap.

If you like the ruby instead of tawny, Warre's Warrior is a staple of mine. If you are rich, don't drink anything less than 20 years 🙂

KWV from S Africa is a very good ruby that you should be able to buy for about $10. Light weight but good buy for warm evenings. I agree there are several good Aussie buy's, just try them. Also Quady make a nice zin port that should be around $14 and at that is a good buy. If you really want to tuin your life, the first port my wife tasted was a '66 Graham's. She now thinks they all should taste like that.

Try sandman tawny inexspensive but good around $11.00 a bottle, or try taylor vintage tawny port for the same price 🙂.

Try Hildalgo's amontillado while you're at it. While it's techically a Spanish sherry, it stands up to cigar smoke like a port and has much more nuance. LG
