I have been using a coolerdor quite successfully, or so I thought, for some time now. I recently went into my stash and found that the smokes on the bottom of the cooler had a problem. I keep my larger cigars on the bottom, and I smoke them less often, but when I grabbed a couple of churchills, the wrapper felt almost silky, yet somewhat loose. This happened to several different brands so it wasn't just the cigar itself. Does the bottom of the coolerdor receive different humidity than the top? Is stick rotation necessary in order to promote the best aging? Are my bottom sticks too moist? Help, help and help. Thanks.

In my experience, yes. Your cigars will need rotating. I too have had sticks in the same dor for the same amount of time when suddenly squish. The ones on the bottom are spongy. You can hold in your hand and squeeze em and they just feel wet. Yet those above are okay. Needless to say I moved them all and began rotating. So,,, rotate. Or as joedayan said a few days back, Smoke more cigars. 🙂

Humidity gathers at different concentrations at different levels horizontally. This is why cigars should be stored horizontally rather than vertically: So that the entire cigar maintains the same humidity level.

Has anybody used the cedar separaters that can be used in humidors? Do they work? Charlie

charlie: they keep different cigars with different oils seperate. they have no affect on humidity.
tailgator: you answered your own question, the top cigars are getting all the humidity and shutting off the pg. always rotate. if you live in australia, rotate the other way.

I like to play with my cigars. So they get rotated weekly. I go to look for a smoke and dig to the bottom and put them on top or move some to the bottom that need aging. Thanks for citing my statement "smoke more cigars". It's good to see the word is spreading

Yes, he was very creative with his "Torpedo", whoops, Torpedos! And for the record I rotate my cigars quite frequently, and will do so more often now that I have heard the war stories on this post. Charlie

You could add a small fan to the coolerdor to add air circulation. The type I am refering to are the small fans that are on the top of the new Pentium III chips. You might find them at a computer store or Radio Shack.
You may also want to put some type of rack at the bottom of the unit to allow the air to circulate better. Let me know if this works out, I have been contemplating the coolerdor idea myself due to my growing cigar invintory since finding this site.
