LOS ANGELES - The Slim-Fast diet drink company has dumped Whoopi Goldberg from its advertising because its executives were unhappy with remarks the comedian made at a recent political rally that mocked President Bush.
"We are disappointed by the manner in which Ms. Goldberg chose to express herself and sincerely regret that her recent remarks offended some of our consumers. Ads featuring Ms. Goldberg will no longer be on the air," Slim-Fast general manager Terry Olson said in a press release Wednesday.

Goldberg participated at a recent Democratic fund-raiser at Radio City Music Hall in New York, joining performers such as John Mellencamp, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul Newman, Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange and John Leguizamo.

At one point in a speech mocking the Bush administration, Goldberg used his surname as a sexual reference.

The event raised $7.5 million for the John Kerry-John Edwards presidential ticket. Both Kerry and Edwards attended, but neither commented about the jokes made by the celebrities toward Bush.

Goldberg's representatives did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

Slim-Fast Foods is based in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Yes, if you want to take large sums of money from a public corporation to "represent them" as a spokesperson, and they don't like the way you "represent them" by your actions, yes you lose your job. I seriously doubt intelligent political commentary would have cost her the SlimFast gig. But the 5th grade playground rant she decided to spout, with a wine bottle in her hand, did cost her.

Same way Kobe is losing his high-$$ endorsements, because they don't like the way he "represents them" anymore. I guess McDonald's doesn't want an accused rapist pimping burgers to children, even though he hasn't been found guilty yet. Yes, that's the way it works in America. Let me know if you find a for-profit entity that wouldn't react that way.

Funny... so you're all for speaking your mind, but a company can't fire the person who represents them for their vulgar attitude on a public stage? Are you also saying I can’t boycott the Anheuser-Busch organization for using the rapper Ludicrous for their spokesman? This is the same rapper who writes about cop killing, beating women and drug abuse. To say you support free speech but not the consequences for that free speech is simply ridicules.

Snowwolf, FYI she got canned for speaking out AGAINST Gay Rights. So the Left isn't the only ones who pay the price for not being the kind of rep the companies want!

It is indeed a co's right to can anyone they find doesn't conform to their image. I just find it disturbing is all. No one has mentioned anything about the head of Parks system firing. I guess that's dubya's right as well. BTW,I find that disturbing as well. X

CW - You're right - I had that bass ackwards in my enthusiasm to make the point. You said what I really wanted to say - you can get canned for swinging in either direction farther than what the "corporate wallet" wants. Naturally, corporations want to stay middle road because they want to sell stuff to people on both sides of the fence. Everyone's money is the same color. And yes, when you're a publically held corporation, it is all about the money, not free speech rights.

I assume you mean the Chief of the Parks Police. No one has said much because it's not been much of a news item, I guess. Her 7-month career was not very distinguished.

Perhaps the administration made an error putting someone in place who wasn't from the Parks System. Perhaps she's dead-on and she's an embarassement to the administration. Perhaps she had some good ideas but took the wrong course to air her grievances.

At any rate, I seriously doubt GW personally handled this one, but (I know I'm breaking new ground here) political appointees lose their jobs on a regular basis if they make problems for the people who appointed them. That would be Democrats and Republicans.

Goodness knows Bill Clinton never silenced anyone who made problems for him, now did he?

I might be missing something, but I don't know what this is about. Care to attach a link to the story? I watch the news all the time and the only thing I see is how great a match up Kerry and Edwards is.

I always liked Whoopi well enough, but hated her politics. I don't begrudge someone, if they use the media to voice their political opinions, if they have more access than I. After all, it is a free country. I don't take their opinions any more seriously just because they are famous. The opinions of the plumber, the farmer, the truck driver, etc. are just as important as the opinions of any Hollywood celebrity. Hell, let em talk! She sure did step in it though. 🙂
