We have a state that is dead even between Bush and Kerry. Yet that same state is currently passing an amendment to their constitution that will ban gay marriages by 73% with 70% reporting.

Seems to me a state like that would carry Bush easy. Normally I would think that means that folks want Bush out more than Kerry in but I believe Bush barely carried the state last year.

So that leaves me with the thought that liberal or conservative they unite on the gay marriage issue. If that is the case why vote for a candidate that is pro gay marriage?

Dave, to be honest I'm with you only on the other side of the issue.... Kerry/ and this is all they have running???? will sink this country faster then Clinton Did.. and we all know he DID just that... but on the other hand... Bush has done what he promised the American people he was going to do... I don't like the Circle around the Administration!!! but I can live with that better then what I or anyone else would be living with if Kerry takes office....

kerry's not pro-gay marriage (if he was, i'd have an easier time voting for him, because i think my brother should have some kind of legal recourse with his partner of forever-and-a-day).

k's official stance is the same as bush's: pro-civil unions (which the states would determine) but anti-gay marriage.

Hog...Kerry has been pretty outspoken about this issue. He's for a state's right for banning gay marriage. He's stated that a marriage is between a man and a woman. It probably pissed off his base supporters but they'll take any crumbs from the Kerry table and be satiated with them.

Like it's been mentioned before...Just wait and Kerry will be on the other side of the issue too. It's only a matter of time before he becomes desperate for votes to "reach out" to everyone he can!

I still think that we should can both of them & do a write in vote... What do you think? Harrison Ford & Tom Clancy?

I honestly believe your brother does deserve the legalities that a marriage provides, but does he and his partner really care if that is brought about by "marriage" or a well defined "civil union"?

tailgater: yes, it matters very much to him. even well-defined, civil unions lack hundreds of legal benefits that marriage has.

they were married in a church, btw. they want to have the govt. legalities bestowed upon them that other married couples have. it's not about health care for them, though; they both have good jobs (my brother's a truck driver for ford). mostly it's about their kids and wanting them to be protected like other folks' children are protected.

Please, I mean no offense. I strongly feel that gay people deserve the normalcy that a legal bond offers. I'm not convinced that it has to be identical to traditional marriage, but it should be equal.

If there are gaping loopholes with the current civil unions, then they should be remedied. There is no reason to redefine the historical significance of the institution of marriage.

In fact, before I was made aware that a device called civil unions even existed, I was FOR gay marriage.

I realize that there are two sides to every issue. unfortunately for the gay community, it seems that only the extremist wackos are the ones fighting for their cause. It does a disservice to their plight, and also strengthens the resolve for those that oppose them.
